Why do people need to buy powerful cars? Big v8s, highly strung little motors, performance cars etc. Dont get me wrong ..I like driving but I dont have to go fast to enjoy. So why are these monsters on the road. All I can come up with is the little **** syndrome.. Mine is bigger or faster than yours....

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Do you like driving? No, seriously, do you really truely enjoy driving?
I do, so i buy cars i enjoy driving. Most of the time, that means cars that go fairly quick and corner extremely well. In most respects, performance cars.
The other attraction i personally find with performance cars is from an engineering perspective. I like the thought i know has been put into making my car a little different to everything else on the road. You can certainly take that to the other extreme from an engineering perspective, and you might find fuel efficiency, diesel cycle, engine longevity, reliability, quality of panel fit and build of more interest than having some idosyncratic piece of machinery you need to learn to really enjoy.
It's just another hobby, IMO. Like every other hobby, it costs you money and for some reason returns personal gratification. Maybe i just have a small **** as well, though

Putting your foot down in a powerful car = adrenelin rush.
No two ways about it.
Although the media has destroyed the car ethusiast I believe there is a time and place for everything and having a modified car doesn't make you the equivalent of a crack smoking bank robbing child molester.

Answer.
Because you can.
Maybe you've never been in a car that has the potential to outrun a big capacity bike.

I personally love car's with stupid amount's of power, even if you can't use it. But you've got it.
I can't wait to go for a ride in my friend's blown, alcohol, injected small block ute. 40psi + 1100hp on the street through 265's!

As long as people get their jollies without causing problems for anyone else I like to look at it as being just part of the rich tapestry of life (well OK, maybe I don't appreciate being woken up at 3:00am by some ****head with totally open exhausts on his harley who just has to go past my place at twice the speed limit and using full throttle)
Interesting choice of word "Monster" - what made you use that particular word ? And what sort of driving do you enjoy ?2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

I've owned a number of very fast cars over the years, and I don't need to 'race' them on the road to enjoy them. But, I'd much rather drive an R32 than a Polo. Even if it is at the Victorian speed limits.MY08 R32, DSG, Sunroof, RNS510

buying a car is no longer just about being practical. In a sense theyre a lifestyle item. After owning a couple of cars with sporting intentions I find it hard to go back to driving say my dads AU falcon. A car so dull just takes any joy there is out of driving and makes it a mundane chore.
If i could afford it. Id have a porsche in the garage for sure. Perhaps in a couple years time ill be able to afford the garage. That will be a nice start
At the end of the day If it brings you some joy. then why not?

I think tastes in vehicles, driving styles are as varied and personal as art / music appreciation. There are extreems at both end of the scale - always have been, always will be.
Personal views are just that ... personal views/preferences. I grew up with fast cars and still love them. Some don't ... their choice.
What I object to (as with religion) is someone trying to force their opinions on me as "The True Way". There is no true way ... or maybe there's a true way for each individual.
