Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

So stop responding, you are only giving the fire more fuel and oxygen. If everyone ignores it for a while it will wither and go away.

You must be joking cars of the 70's "total junk".
I remember reading all about the wonderful Leyland P76 and riding in the
back of my parents 1974 Holden HQ premier station wagon V8.
Suspension soaking up all the potholes, parents holding on to the steering
wheel with grim death on corners, and no chaffing from the seat belts
            because there was none.
The big breakthrough or the era was RTS (radial tuned suspension).

I owned the second best car after my MKV Gti in the 70s....A Triumph Dolomite Sprint..2lt, 16valve, DOHC, rear wheel drive with six speed manual and real wood dash and trim. It went like stink and was a great drive....way ahead of its time.
So there were excellent drivers cars then if you looked hard.n:

An overdrive Dolly - what a blast from the past! They really were a hot car- I only had 'five speeds' in my Healey 100/4.

In the early to mid 70s, my family owned a ZD 351 Fairlane, a 420G Jaguar and a 1950 Riley 2.5 litre. When it came to non stop overnight drives from Brisbane to Melbourne, the Riley was always first choice, despite its age, primarily because of its two turns lock to lock rack and pinion steering, torsion bar independent front suspension and a very long wheelbase (same as an RR Silver Shadow) that absorbed all the potholes.

And that's why I still own one to this day, but I do love my Jetta TDI.

I had a 82 datsun 280zx and they were the bomb.

cornered well, stopped well 5 speed felt like a tourer, long distance traveler.

Reliable as hell, Im sure everyone has a friend that has had a datsun that has been unkillable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                          Cheers

Bugger missed it...The Dolomite sprint was a great car in its time and in many ways still is better than some of the dull stuff coming out of japan now.
