  • Buying a Turbo Jetta or golf gti mk5

Hi guys I kinda posted this in the newbies corner, but thought I'd get more response here.

Currently looking at getting either one of the 2 cars mentioned. My budget is strictly around 22k 23k max for GTI and 20k for jetta so I'm obviously looking at 05 06 ish. I've found some nice Jetta's in Brissy that i dig.

What you guys think? Is there anything apart from the ordinary (more model specific) I should be wary of?

    Looking forward to more posts!

You need to figure out if its the extra boot space you need if not then the GTI is a better buy, better handling, heaps better interior & the option of manual or dsg.

Boot space not really a necessity but with the prices I've seen so far the Jetta has been 3k ish cheaper, so it would be nice to same some dosh. I'm really open to both!

had a quick look on carsales for sydney --> they are priced really well.

the white looks v/nice, but the blue graph w beige leather is even better. lower kms (which in my opinion is very important)..
offer blue owner 21k (or 20k if you really want to break their balls...)

or a similar kms (the only one priced under $25k) GTI that is manual:

Yeah I'm liking the looks on both of them and would reallly love to get it around 20k. The reason I'm currently leaning towards the Jetta is the fact that I can get it at lower k's and a cheaper price. A GTI for around 23k I'm sure I'd be looking at around 90 100k.

On a somewhat tangent, does GTI parts fit on Jettas? For example coils, same stud pattern?

I like the look of both Jettas, but personally prefer Geaphite Blue,as I think it suits the Jetta perfectly, whereas the White can look a bit bland.
Bit White will be easier to maintain.
They are the same age,as were sold by the same dealer at the same time,as they have the same number plates.

            Drive both,and deceide.

Yes,the Graphite has done less mileage, and has that lovely Cream leather...............

I would love to offer 20k for either right now but until I sell my current car, I'm a bit short haha. I have contemplated a loan if a great deal comes along and pay it off as soon as I sell my car (so only the 300 fee for the loan and break, which is not much if you got a great deal) I'm just not sure if either of these cars would classify as a "GREAT" deal.

A graphite Jetta TFSI is a great car. You already get the GTI brakes and would probably want to get lowering springs or a sportier setup fpr EITHER the Jetta or GTI anyway. Plus possibly a tune. There are only a few minor things you'd miss out on from the GTI, which you could get for not much cost, anyway.

Plus the Jetta is a current model car, whereas the GTI is well superseded by both GTI VI and Golf R!

Yes I am biased but have OEM+ uprated suspension & brake setup and am happy to have a unique car.

Hope you can do the same and join the graphite Jetta club!

I share your thoughts on the car Bizi! The mods that I have in mind are def a tune, springs and rims. Any pics at all on the forum of your ride? Would 20k for that graphite one be a great price?

You can't really lose with either car. I've never seen a Jetta with the steering wheel paddles for the DSG which I tend to like.
I also think the mk5 GTI is a better car than the mk6 GTI so don't let it being a previous model put you off the car.

Yeah I'm more excited about modding a Jetta as it's more "unknown" to a sense and most people wouldn't know it shares the same engine.

NOWW.. Does gti parts fit on a Jetta? If not are Jetta parts hard to source? Do they share the same studd pattern?

Jetta TFSI is almost the same as GTI in almost every respect, aside from the changes at the boot section.
My Jetta's (Koni/Neuspeed) suspension, rear sway bar and full braking system from the hubs onward is all GTI.

Stephen8512 is on the forums and had a knockout Jetta project and tons of GTI and/or R32 mods. Have a look for his threads.
He had KW coilover suspension fitted but standard 17" wheels to keep it stealth!

So there's no incompatibility of parts between 2.0 TFSI engined Golf GTI and Jetta TFSI aside from stuff at the boot-end, like the exhaust, rear floor, rear bumper/valance etc.

Go for it. Fit the GTI parts like paddles, pedals etc like Stephen did.

A few pics on my picasaweb VW gallery. Note that mine is a 103TDI, which misses out on a few things that you get on the TFSI (like the GTI size front brakes and slightly lowered sports suspension). However it's worth upgrading the TFSI with better/lower suspension, bigger brakes & wheels etc.

Before lowering; 17" RRS RX sold now.

Note the wheels are Audi 35 offset, so track is wider and front guards need to be rolled to be wide enough. Has fender screw mod too.

I think the Golf GT and Jetta are both good lookers in BG colour

Sorry it's a dark pic, but check the standard gap on the TDI! Home after delivery day.
