I was in the same boat as you 6 months ago and ended up with the Gti, i just felt for the same money i might as well get the car I dont need to spend anymore money on later on (i.e suspension). I paid 22.5k for my 06 black gti with 105k. One thing i did miss out on was the leather which seems to be more common with the Jetta's but for me that wasnt a deal breaker.
Another possible difference is that the GTI may well have led a harder life or had an accident repaired, compared to a Jetta which may have had a more mature and/or careful/caring owner. I don't know if there is any demographic record but would think the Jetta is more of a company car , e.g. a nice sales rep car and/or a fifty/sixtysomething person's luxury small car alternative to a Corolla, with sedate corolla-style driver.
GTI drivers are much more likely to have taken their car to its limits on the track or elsewhere than a sales rep or retiree/Corolla person!
Jettas are very, very highly specced with equipment in Australia, so you get things like the passenger under-seat drawer, heated seats (on my leather seats anyway), probably more chance of leather in a Jetta than a GTI.
If you can find one with OEM xenon headlights, IMO these look a lot classier and will make driving much better at night. It would be $1.5-2k to get such a xenon setup retrofitted, so if you can buy the car with it, you're laughing!
Since you want to mod the car, you'd virtually be starting with a similar car and ending up with a similar ending whichever you chose, but the Jetta is more inconspicuous if you mod it tastefully.

Yeah that blue GTI i have shot an enquiry through and he just told me to shoot an offer hehe. If I had the choice to either pick a Jetta or a GTI with same price and k's, I would choose a GTI as I'm used to driving smaller cars and I have a soft spot for it hehe.
Yeah i saw that one in sydney, i dunno i dont really love the GTI's in 3dr. Even though i rarely use my rear doors i just like the thought that if one day I did decide to have kids I wouldnt have to sell up.
Bizi you might be surprised, I read in the wheel's GTI edition a few months back & it stated that the demographic for Mkv GTI's was males aged 40-50. I tend to agree with you in terms of buying one that may have changed hands already (i.e your buying off the 2nd owner) but if your buying a GTI off the first owner then its easier to tell the sort of life its had.
Check all the local forums as there are plenty of GTIs up for sale right now. Spend a fair bit more and get an almost-new Pirelli. There are a couple for sale around the forums. Similar if not same engine as the Golf R!
Isn't Maca up near you selling his Jetta?
I still think a nice TFSI Jetta would be a lot more interesting than a GTI, unless you want something specific. There's a hardcore GTI coming up for sale that does crazy quarter mile times if that interests you. Many cars like that will be pretty thrashed, though.

Can't stretch budget anywhere beyond 22k so unfortunately can't look at the pirelli. Maca is selling his Jetta up here, but I would personally prefer the TFSI. In the mean time I'll keep an eye out everywhere, but mannn I'm personally loving that silver 3 door GTI i posted earlier!

Geez for that price I think the kms are not a problem. That's non TFSI, base petrol pricing, without all the TFSI extras!

VW dealers may have some arrangement like a rebate on sales of new GTIs / Golf Rs where there is a GTI trade in, so that the dealers offer a better GTI trade in and it might be easier to just trade in the GTI than trade it.
Hence VW could be indirectly supporting the GTI trade in price (or disguising discounting on new GTIs) via the stealers. Which might mean that a lot of people coming off leases just trade the old car and you might find them pop up in the Used VW dealer network.
I am just speculating. It may not be the case and people just can't be arsed with the hassle of a private sale when there are more used GTIs for sale than there are buyers, because so many ex-lease people are upgrading from '06 and '07 GTIs now.
