i personally couldn't be arsed to travel interstate for a car.

from what you've said there is no hurry and you need to sell your current car first anyway. be confident the right car will pop up near your area when you have the $$ ready to buy.

also on the subject of used mk5 GTI's: looking at both those carsales listings (QLD blue and silver 3dr NSW) do ANY GTI drivers out there clean the exhaust tips??

it's one of the things i make a point of cleaning/polishing when i give my car the once over... i've noticed there are HEAPS of MK5 GTI's on the road with black tips. just an observation.

Yeah I guess there is no rush, but just that if an awesome deal comes along I'd just consider buying it now, which that one seems. As for the interstate travelling I personally don't mind, get to see some friends and architecture.

im 99% sure thats at the Independent motor auctions in Villawood, Sydney. They often have real cheap cars, my brother inlaw purchased his 06 liberty wagon from there at a steal of price and hasnt had any issues with it. But like all auctions there is a considerable risk, as usually they dont let you test drive them and also its hard to tell what the previous owner was like.

I'd do what I did when I bought my Jetta - keep an open mind for what I am looking for and be ready to contact the seller immediately when I see a good one.

Good, underpriced cars sell immediately. Sometimes sales fall through because the buyer can't arrange immediate finance.

Regarding the particular car, I think it's worth getting one still under (3yr/100k) warranty, in order to get the warranty extended.

Regarding options: Bixenon is really the only option (aside from engine type and kilometers) that's better to buy with the car. The rest can be fitted later. The bixenons are relatively expensive new but even more expensive/fiddly to do aftermarket, since you'd likely be up for absolute minimum $1k plus fitting.

Yep it sure is. Didn't know before but I guess I'm not very keen on an auction sale regardless of price, plus I don't know anyone around me with experience.

Since I'm looking at 06 models I guess that if the previous owners wanted that extra warranty they would have already done so?

Good call! I googled them; they have a stock list and that Jetta is last on the VW list!

That is the cheapest Jetta that I have seen, even non turbos ,manual, with high mileage are quite a lot more.

It looks immaculate, and the mileage is not high,as that car will easily do 300 000 kilometers.

I would go to Sydney, and GrAB it.

And I am not being biased or anything like that, but Reflex Silver is the Jettas signature colour too,and is so classic and practical, just like the car....

Yeps did the same! Now do any of you Sydneysiders know if they are a reputable auction place? Hmm it has got euro plates? Maybe previous owner took care of it? ha

Anyone also experienced with buying from auctions?

Once, a taxi driver had given me rave reviews about buying Euro cars there - telling me how his brother or BIL got a Saab with low miles for an exceptional price.

Check the site in case they have an arrangement to get NRMA or an independent specialist to check out the car.

When I had a one day trial of my Jetta I took it to Seb at Euro Automotive, Girraween, to check it over. Maybe you can get a VW-trained mechanic to go there and check it for you.

Yes the Euro plates are a small sign that it's been cared for. Maybe contact the place to check it's still available, then offer to put down a deposit on your credit car, subject to being able to get a person to go and check it for you.

You'd want to ensure that the DSG gearbox is OK,since it's such a major cost to replace. I'd expect that if the car's got a full service history, it will be good mechanically.

Being at an auction I doubt I'll be able to take the car for a test drive at all unfortunately. I'll give the place a call tomorrow to see if the car is still there and if I could put a deposit down. If so I might give Euro Automotive a call (thanks Bizi) however would there be any dubbers out there that could potentially help me out?

EDIT: OK that carsales link is now goneskis but the info on the IMA site is still there. Think it will be best to call first thing tomorrow.

                          Good luck, deewhy.

Keep your options open, since this car has probably sold given the underprice, its history and mileage. There are some other nice Jettas on carsales, but not nearly as cheap.

Price isn't everything; if you can afford to wait (and save) then you will likely see some more really good ones come up at short notice. They will be ex-lease, 2007 cars coming out of lease, probably.

If you can get one of those, still under factory warranty, you will be laughing. Otherwise check out my one. Has the extended warranty but is TDI but very nicely factory-optioned.

Just a quick thought - you realise this car at the auction is NOT a turbo petrol jetta but the mormally aspirated petrol model?

I haven't had the pleasure of driving a Golf GTI V or VI so I can't really comment but I can tell you that a turbo petrol jetta is a great car and will give you loads of satisfaction. From memory I think the GTI has a tiny bit more speed due to its lighter weight. My Jetta is factory standard, no mods but its got more than enough of everything from speed to handling I could ever need on an aussie road.

That Jetta is most certainly a TURBO model....
