Shannons is cheaper than AAMI for my cars.
interesting... do others have the same view?

If so, i think i might just pay the extra 300-400 bucks to stay with nrma just to be safe.

Oh and which companies offer choice of repairers apart from nrma?

I have my 25th birthday in exactly 1 week, so thought i would check out the difference in premiums.

I am currently insured with aami for close to 1400, no one else will insure me apart from nrma for 1700..

So after next week when i turn 25, prices will be as follows:
        Shannons $1,096
        Aami $1,183
        Nrma $1,567

I haven't tried others yet, but at this point shannons is looking like my best bet. Ive always been with aami so not sure if its worth changing just to save $90. Any one have opinions on which is the better insurer?

hmm according to JohnBu aami is really bad... i have read on the mk6 area alot of people have said to stay away from aami...

The thing is what are the chances of an accident vs price vs theft chances... if the car is always in lock up garage at work/home... i guess the chances of the car getting stolen is much less than being parked on the street...

From what i have heard, the worst part of aami is no choice of repairer, which mean it could be a dodgy job.

Currently me with nrma is $1603... next year will be the same... i have to renew on 11th april, i don't turn 25 till end of may... Aami quote is $1284...

I have just called Shannons, and @24 it will be 1277.75... but once i turn 25 it will be 1051.20...

I'm considering just going to shannon in april... the difference is $226.55... the 45 days if i stay with Nrma will cost me $1603/365 x 45 = $197.63... so the difference is $28.86, and i don't have to go through the process of ringing up, getting refund etc. Paying by month would cost an extra 126.33p.a. that would equate to 15.57 extra on top of the $197.63...

Edit... all quote for agreed value of $40000

yeah I was going to say why dont go you go per the month for next couple of months till you turn 25 ... thats what ive done with aami. Shannons also have quarterly and half year payment option which is attractive.

My prices are based on a market value of 30k, which im very happy with.

per month would make it more expensive, hence going to shannons even more attractive, as the difference is only $28! For you is different because you are already with AAMI and prices are cheaper to begin with, plus the start of your insurance date is probably alot further away to your birthday compared to mine.

But yeah i will see, but at the moment Shannons is the way to go for convenience and price, as their price for under 25 is cheaper than aami so aami is definitely out of the question.

Shannons have pay by the month at no extra cost, monthly premium = annual premium/12. win for me and cashflow.

den525- your calculations are flawed. the savings will be greater than $28.86.
                $1051.20 + $197.63 = $1,249 insurance ends 26th May 2011
                $1277.75 insurance ends 11th April 2011

                I'd do the first option.

                $1,249 / (365+45) = you pay an average annualised premium of $1,112.

oh- Aami are fine... until you need to make a claim

Yes AAMI are ok, just they don't give you a choice of repairer, but in my situation it was either Shannons or Just Cars. Just Cars are $2200, Shannons are $2900.

You have a point... so going to shannons in april would cost more than staying with nrma for 45 days...?

As i'm currently with NRMA... and the $197.63 is for nrma insurance for 45 days... which would mean shannons insurance from 26th May 2010 for 1051.20... therefore nrma+shannons until 26th may 2011 would be $1249... and if i go shannons straight away on 11th april... it would mean 1277.75+129.60 (1051.20 for 45 days) = 1407.35 till 26th may 2011...

                      So that is 1407.35 - $1249 = $158.35... both going till 26th May 2011...

The thing with Shannons is it has to be 12 months... i can't go to shannons and stop after 45 days and sign up for another 12 months...

So the question is... how long does it take to quit my nrma contract after 45 days... are there any extra costs (eg. admit fee, early termination fee etc) if i quit 45 days into my 12 months nrma contract...

I know that!! I was saying, if you mod you can only go JCI or Shannons.

Well someone decided to ram a trolly into our car at K&D today. We weren't at the car at the time but luckily one of the staff members chased the guy down as he was walking away. Took down all his details and then handed them to us when we got back to the car. Very nice

So anyhow - have made an insurance claim through AAMI and can let you know how they perform. I was on hold for a good while (20 mins probably) when I originally called them but once I got through the service was excellent. They've taken everything on board and will be contacting the guy who hit the car. They've already booked me in on the 13th to drop the car off. They'll assess it at AAMI and will get it repaired from there. They'll taxi me to wherever I want to go after I've dropped it off.

Of note, I've made several large claims through AAMI before and never had a problem. People seem to complain about them a fair bit on these forums but from my experience they've always been very good.

For now I get to drive around with a decent dent in the car. I might contact AAMI and see what their policy is on loaner cars as it will be a bit awkward to be without it.

I dont think its the service at aami people are complaining about, more the fact that you can't choose the workshop to perform the repairs which means it could potentially get fixed at somewhere that wont meet your expectations.

Also if you haven't ticked the box on your premium for a loan car service then aami probably wont issue you with one, having said that if your not at fault then I dont see why you should be disadvantaged in anyway shape or form.

Well - I guess my happiness at the repair job will be the most important thing really. That said - When my S15 was nearly written off the repairs that were done by the AAMI repairer were fine. It depends a lot on the repairer I suppose.

I just had a look on the website for info about loan cars ... there wasn't much so I suspect you're right. Luckily we don't use the car heaps during the week... we generally ride to work.
