What is the deal with the GTI Pirelli and insurance??? When i bought my car i traded in another, so insurance stayed with NRMA...

I've been told other insurance companies are cheaper, so I decided to look around... but so many companies don't insure the GTI for 25 years and younger... why? It's not exactly that powerful...

I kinda understand alot of companies don't want to insure my bike (desmo) but this is just a golf, i get insured for the 135i and they don't want to insure my car apart from NRMA and AAMI.

    Nrma - 1603 aami 1284...

    Shannons won't insure me till i'm 25...

So who are you guys with? and any recommendations??

My other car and bike plus home and content is with nrma, i could bundle the rest... but they all have separate start dates etc and it would be a hassle to change... so i thought this car might be the 1st to change!

I'm with JCI $2189 w/ $500 excess $700 age excess. The insurers are smart, they even have a different classification GTI and GTI Pirelli

Shannons WOULD insure me even though I'm 21 except I would be as a rating 2 and that would mean $2900.

If you plan to mod anything with your car you will not have any choice other than Just Car Insurance of Shannons.

    Hope this helps.

That sux. It is unfair isn't it; being profiled by your age and type of car you drive.

That said, it works the other way as well - as you get older and drive more mainstream car, you pay very little for insurance. I also noticed that price varies according to where you live.

Just car is only slightly cheaper than Nrma ($80), so i would still stay with Nrma as service is much better.

For Shannons did you call them for them to insure you? because for an online quote, they wouldn't let me. I actually turn 25 6 weeks after i have to reinsure, so i could go 6 weeks without insurance to say $600... or maybe they will insure me early.

Aami is actually pretty cheap, $300 cheaper than Nrma... but i think if i leave nrma for 1 car, all my other nrma products might be more expensive...

Best scenario would be for nrma to match aami's quote... don't know if they even do that...

all those prices are with a rating 1 NCB.

I'm not too fussed with being "profiled" even though i have been driving for 7 years now!!! I'm more confused with the car being classed as some sort of race car lol because really at nrma my old car mx5 was actually $10 more than the pirelli!!!! So nrma doesn't discriminate anyone, their prices are all standard.

It is the other companies who discriminate. anyways from my experience, nrma doesn't really car what car you drive, because whether it is my 135i or mx5 or pirelli, it was all the same price with the 135i being proportionally more as the agreed value is higher, but if i put the agreed value down to 40k, it is the same price.

It is true that the 3 door is classed as 'sports' vehicle whereas the 5 door is seen as a regular car

So yeah, if you haven't got any plans for modding, then no point going with JCI or Shannons. Yes, Shannons won't insure you ONLINE however if you call them up they will help you out.

I think going without insurance is very stupid. Providing the car is not financed you are free to switch between insurers as much as you please. They simply give you a pro-rata refund.

At the end of this month I drop down to rating 2. I will be cancelling my insurance package and re-signing as a rating 2, I will be saving $490 for just re-applying one month later (pretty stupid isn't it )

WHAT! that can't be true with the 3 door and 5 door thing right? lol

At the moment i have no intentions to do any mods... what happens if i do make modification to my car... would nrma or aami not insure my car?

My car doesn't have any finance on it... but haven't really thought about switching half way through, my rating is 1...

Why would your rating drop during your insurance time...? do they do it by age? i thought they just do it by years you are with them...

Anyways i think i will have a chat with nrma to see if they can do something about the price, when i went in person for the green slip, they took $100 off, as i was going to turn 25 during the year, maybe they will do that with the insurance, i will just bluff them that i will go to aami as well, and considering i have home and content, plus another car with them, they should do something nice for me... (wishful thinking?)

Insurance is a fairly complex business.

Just imagine that you are the insurance company. How would you provide a competitive quote to a potential customer and yet be profitable as a business.

One price fits all is simple but does not work, so you discriminate based on the likelihood of having to payout a claim(s). So how do you do that discrimination? You do profiling based on the information about the customer - all those personal information (age of driver, suburb, make/model, last time you have an at fault claim, etc...) you fill in to provide an online quote goes into a fairly complex mathematical model to spit out a number. The more sophisticated the model is, the more it discriminates; i.e. those that are less likely to claim will pay even less and those more likely to claim will pay even more.

I use VW insurance (backed by Allianz).
Allianz has been good to us (previous car which was a Honda Civic), no fuss claims and lets us choose who we want the car repaired with.
If the car is new, the provide a 3 yr replacement warranty. All repairs are done using only VW spare parts.

I just took out a policy with AAMI on my mk5 gti (regular edition) and it was $1398 I am 24.

It comes down to your post code as well, I know it cost a lot less for me to insure it at my parents place in Newcastle, which makes little sense.

How much are you paying through VW insurance? I actually like the "bigger" companies as there are slightly less fuss, if something unfortunately do happen.

Yeah I got an online quote from AAMI on my pirelli for $1284 (24 as well), at my house up in hornsby which i only stay probably a weekend every 2-3 weeks now, if i put my city apartment down, it is $400 more!!

well probably going to ring nrma up and see how close they can match it... because it is a hassle having different insurances at different companies.

Definitely true. Back in the day, I had a Nissan Exa with a stock aussie market 1.8L NA engine (CA1. Because the car was a 2-door with an engine of 1.8L or larger, it counted as a 'sports car', and thus I paid higher insurance.

Swapping the CA18 out for a CA18DET (1.8L turbo from a Japanese market Exa) didn't increase my premium when I did it!
                      Nothing to see here...

luckily for the gti pirelli, 3dr and 5dr is the same price.

I also noticed something dodgy about NRMA, for the agreed value, the premium stays the same between 36k - 41k!!! but it automatically goes to the lowest, but if you switch it to higher, the premium stays the same!!

Anyways, called Nrma they said they can't match aami's price, so i guess i will have to switch, don't like getting ripped off for $400 for practially the same thing.

Ps for AAMI i noticed, for agreed value of $40000 it is only $7 cheaper to agreed value of $42000 and $15 difference to $44000! decision decision decisions

is that good...? as on aami my quote is 1284... but i'm 24 with rating 1... i'm guessing 24 for VW insurance, would be much more than 1284...
