AWD certainly isn't the 'key' but it is a very important factor - all else being equal.

I'd love AWD in the pirelli, but certainly not at the cost of 250kg and a body that's not built go around corners or stop. That would more than offset any gains the AWD alone will give you.

As guy correctly pointed out, you need power, weight, traction, grip, low COG and stopping power.

Just having AWD and 200kw by no means makes up for the rest if it's let down everywhere else. You want something that will stop, turn and brake as well as grip.

I agree a worked Golf R is going to be one serious piece of kit though. I reckon I'd take one over a S3, simply coz I like dubs so much.

        • Hmm...Pirelli engine or MK6 engine, we still don't know which one is better. But I have an idea.

We have The Flash Chat room…
so everybody who is interested could go to flash chat lets say 8:00 tonight or tomorrow, have a debate and than the OP and main initiators of this thread discussion could each write their own conclusion to the topic and post it in the thread.

Of course you can continue the same debate in the forum after, the difference would be, it would be faster and the thread would be shorter with more usefull informations in it.

            • Looks like everyone went super side tracked in this topic and just backed up what car they own/love.

Facts are the two cars (Tiguan vs. GTI) are so different they can't be compared. When cars are being compared they need to be compared in stock form, not "oh $1000 in this car would be faster/better than this car" etc.

Tiguan - AWD but more power loss through the drivetrain, makes good power after a basic tune, cheaper when new.
GTI - FWD less power loss through drivetrain than AWD but also encounters problems with traction, also makes good power after tune, tad more expensive, but also more nimble.

Because if we're comparing bang for buck and speed, friends workshop (hipowerracing who also own the 59.69 sec CRX around QR Sprint track) and I owned a 1968 Mini Morris which ran 11.97x's down the quarter and only running a 2L NA engine Only problem with it was we could never get it road registered so we abandoned the project and the motor is running in a different car.

Under which rock have you guys been while the world passed you by?

                Another example:

                Audi A3 2.0T 147kw 280NM 1300kg FWD 0-100km/h = 7.1s
                Audi A3 2.0T 147kw 280NM 1550kg AWD 0-100km/h = 7.2s

So same power (even though its a modest 147kw) and 250kg is offset and beaten by 0.1s 0-100km/h ..... thats all AWD there .....

Now increase the power slightly ..... still similar weights

                Scirrocco R 199kw 350NM 1300kg FWD 0-100km/h = 6.2s
                Golf R 199kw 350NM 1550kg FWD 0-100km/h = 5.7s

So same power and 250kg extra is offset and beaten by 0.5s 0-100km/h ..... again, thats all AWD there .....

And here is the rub .... an increase of only 52kw and 70NM and the SAME weight has resulted in 1.4s difference 0-100km/h in AWD and only 1s in FWD. As your power increases this difference only gets bigger and bigger.

Traction, or lack thereof is a bigger factor in sprint times than a small increase in weight ....

So imagine adding 80kw and more importantly 140NM to the same weight AWD body and a 2.4s 0-100km/h improvement is perfectly reasonable ......

AWD is the key to cars in this class (there is a reason WRX's and EVOs exist) ..... and for the ultimate performing VW going forward get a Golf R ... driven by an uprated Pirelli engine ...

He'll get the poosoy even if his desmo is broken. Can't compete with that.

When comparing crazy money, $100k for a pirelli is cheap when compared to $100k for a motorbike. That's one crazy (yet deeply beautiful) machine.

Not much makes me jealous when it comes to bikes, but the desmo will do it.

                        • That mentions the intercooler differences, but does the Pirelli share the same strengthened conrods etc as the S3?

I doubt you'll find a very high percentage of S3 owners that have paid close to, let alone over 80K for driveaway pricing.

True, but then while the desmo is broken ... which will be often ... I still get to ride every day ... and sometimes that is even better ....

That bike should be on a podium, not riding around on the dirty streets!

You realise the suspension on that bike alone is worth the better part of $20,000? Apparently the carbon fibre wheels are $5000 a pop.

Anyway, I get sidetracked.. Back to bagging out Tiguans.
