If you think about it the TSI is THE perfect car for a bigger turbo.

As the supercharger can fill in the lag area, you don't have to be as concerned with the low down response for drivability, which all stock turbo's are a comprimise of. Overdrive the blower, make it work a bit further into the range, water / meth injection, and a big fat snail.

Oh and pull off all the sound insulation. Gezuz!

        LOL!
What? And risk having it sound like a tractor?

And you're right about the other stuff. Only trick would be getting the 'handover' right. One of the nice things about the twincharger system is how seamless the power delivery is over such a wide power band. You know - the same way a diesel delivers power. Did I just SAY that?

You'd like my cars sound cog... no underbonnet insulation.. sound dedenning chipped away everywhere.

          I get some serious "WWWWHIIIIINEEEEE"

Sounds like a belt drive on an old Weiland supercharger between 1000-3000

I am kinda hoping that Guy might organise an exhaust/flash combo stage 2 deal whereby we might get some serious boost action.

You know what I'm talking about....I know access is hard, but that blower has a huge wooly jumper on, keeping it both hot AND quiet.

And Barney I appreciate the diesel compliment, but the TDI is far from smooth really, but that's what swayed me to the dark side!

Very interesting stuff and thanks Greg for the TSI manuals, they're great reference material.
I'm amazed that such high figures can be wrung out of these little motors, yes they offer a perfect transition for a bigger turbo but they're still only a 1.4 litre block. I thought they would have already been close to the limit with already high standard boost figures (up to 35 psi), I think 11.5:1 compression ratio and requiring 98 octane in factory trim.
Wow! I wonder what the torque output is?

I can remember when they first came out and a lot of people were poo poo'ing them saying that they have no breathing room for extra mods, well these are very interesting figures but obviously major mods. ECU retunes already can take them up to 150kW'ish, I wonder what's next?

I think you will find that the block is very strong being grey cast iron. The weak point will probably be pistons, then rods, then piston rings, then eventually the crank.
at one point formula 1 cars had 1.5L turbo motors making ~800hp.

It is the size of the turbo that determines your max power on turbo cars.
All things being equal at some point the turbo exhaust wheel simply can't flow any more air and backpressure builds up and the power drops off.

I experienced this on my subaru. Gt2540 turbo struggled to make more than 250kw@wheels. Moved to a GT3040 and on less boost was making 300kw@wheels. Power curve was peaky but very fun. It was fun watching other cars think they had a chance but I had not come on boost until I started to pass 4000. Here is the chart, everything else was the same except the turbo.

NOS is fine on a jap turbo car already running FAT 10:1 full boost fuel trim... but on a TSI running super lean 14:1 fuel trim even when flat out, there isn't much room for some NOS, unless you were to retune it.

...or a diesel, where you basically keep adding NOS till it puts the flame out.

And 1000 bhp in qualifying trim! The mechanics in the Williams Honda team at the time told me that the "hand grenade" qualifying motors were producing closer to 1200 bhp!

They had literally a pile of massive turbos on a bench that were good for 3 laps - one 'out' lap, one hot lap, and one 'in' lap. Same with qualifying motors, qualifying tyres... expensive business! Dunno what they did with the turbos afterwards - they were a bit coy about discussing that part.

Nevertheless they were BIG blowers - you could've stuck your fist in them

And run the risk of something spazzing up and not be covered? I think not... I'd rather wait, iron any bumps out and then attack it!

If I was to modify the engine I wouldn't wait till is out of warranty.
Engine repairs won’t be any cheaper after 3 years and a new engine will better handle the extra power .
