Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    My raybans fit too.
    Only just though, but they're quite wide.

    I havent had my car long enough (havent driven it yet - properly anyways) to fault it. I'm sure anything I find wont be too serious though.

      They must all be like that because I've heard several people comment on the same thing, they're pretty air tight I think is the main reason. If you put a window down a bit and then have everyone try and close their doors they will most likely close first go. I generally wait along side the car now and hold my door ajar and wait for anyone else with me to get out and close their doors first, that way I don't have to yell at them for trying half a dozen times to do it

        Wouldn't be a problem if we were in a left hand drive country.

              ESP is nothing to do with LSD and not comparable.

              BTW: What annoys me most about the MK5 is the speedo error.

                Traction Control would work similar to LSD wouldn't it ?

                    That's what I thought. ESP imcludes two other components, one is ABS, the other is ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) - an electronic LSD.

                      no, a propper LSD is something totally different to the ESP system. sure there is that ASR system but thats like a half ass electronic method that doesnt work as it applies the breaks and cuts too much power.
                      my mates JCW cooper S has one and it allows him to power out of corners sooner, faster, with less understeer whilst NOT spinning up the bloody inside wheel. a car with as much power and torque as a GTI should of came from factory with one.

                        LSD is a mechanical device that transfer torque from inside wheel to outside wheel. it allows you to put on power earlier to exit corner faster;

                        ESP is an electrical system that kills power by applying brake to which ever wheel(s) that the ECU thinks it's losing grip.

                        both should reduce understeer and wheel spin but LSD makes the car faster while ESP makes the car slower.

                            WCMO?

                            Car gets much more road grime than my Corolla (especially the back window and VW hatch handle);

                            You can hear the door seals moving if you drive the car diagonally over a drive way, suggesting the car is not especially rigid;

                            The automatic wipers which go 'frantic' on light rain;

                            The inadequate factory iPod adapter;

                            The announcement of a new model just after I buy this one…

                              Pick up the phone, call your VW service center, take the car to them and they will fix it for you.

                                This has to do with aerodynamics.

                                "The new Golf is essentially characterised by a highly aerodynamic basic body shape. The preconditions for this aerodynamic body shape have been established among other things by defined retreats in the front and rear ends, extremely small shut lines and joint dimensions and the fitting of the windows and headlights flush with the body. In addition, the aerodynamically optimised door mirrors and the trim panels also developed in wind tunnels on the underside of the car make a significant contribution to the drag coefficient of CW = 0.32."

                                You can hear the door seals moving if you drive the car diagonally over a drive way, suggesting the car is not especially rigid;
                                How rigid do you want the car? It has to have some flex or it will end up in pieced. The MKV is one of the most rigid cars around.

                                "It is an established fact that the body of the new Golf has increased in size, safety and quality. A major aspect in this respect is the substantial improvement in rigidity. The dynamic rigidity of the body has been increased by 15% in torsion and 35% in flexion; the static torsional rigidity of the body (25,000 Nm/°) has been improved by no less than 80% (!), which is the best value in the segment."

                                "Irrespective of the safety offered, the high level of rigidity does not come at the detriment of the body weight. It has rather been achieved through systematic lightweight construction. Particularly effective lightweight construction measures worth emphasising are the improved join techniques involving laser welding and the optimised layout of the member structure. There has again been a significant increase in the proportion of high-strength body panels used. The net result is a significant plus in terms of body strength, crash safety and comfort whilst optimising weight. For example the laser-welding process: 140 special robots ensure the high body rigidity of the Golf, among other things, by means of laser-welded seams with a total length of 70 metres, as compared to five metres in the predecessor."

                                The automatic wipers which go 'frantic' on light rain;
                                Adjust them to a slower speed using the control.

                                The announcement of a new model just after I buy this one…
                                ? This has been well known for at least 18 months that it was coming out towards the end of 2008 or start of 2009. The original plan for the Mark 6 was 2010/2011 but it was brought forward due to the costs in producing the Mark 5.
