Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Wifey called from the shops, car will not turn off. They key is stuck, can turn forward to starting position but not back to off position.

    I'm guessing a new ignition barrel is needed, but what about matching keys etc
    Anyone got any idea on a permanent fix ?

    ok some research indicates the issue is the steering column lock.
    Going to have some fun times pulling the fuel pump fuse to kill the engine after each drive and pull the battery terminal.
    Thankfully we bought a new Volvo last week so the Jetta is the spare.

      You can get the ign barrel and lock complete, plus door lock barrel from a wreck provided you can get the matching blade and swap them all over.
      Only difficult part is the sheer bolts but they come out easily enough with a hammer and chisel to get them started.

        Hey There,
        how did you go with your key issue? I had the same problem last year. Key barrel and steering lock - very common problem. I paid somebody to fix - about $1400 New barrel from Germany and no key changes etc. The mechanic that fixed it says he gets about 200 VWs per year with this problem...

          I removed the steering wheel and trim.
          Then took out the whole key barrel.
          Getting the security bolts out was tough, I ended up using an easy out. Replaced with internal hex.

          Bought parts from eBay Ignition Switch Steering Lock Barrel Housing For VW Golf MK5 Mk4 EOS 1K0905851B | eBay

          The immobiliser and new key Ignition Lock Barrel Cylinder Immobilizer + 2 Keys 8E0905855A For VW Golf Skoda | eBay
          This would have meant the key would not work on the physical doors locks.
          I managed to get the key out of the immobiliser with pliers and a vice, so I did not nee the new bit and kept the original key.


          I found my 2nd key did not get stuck, just the one that got stuck not longer worked well.
          So I ordered a new key cut to match, sent photos of the working key and they cut it for me, it works fine.

            We had a similar issue in the T5.1 but it was far less involved to get that bit out. I ended up rebuilding it using parts from a second lock mechanism and while I don't think the steering lock ever engaged again, it never got stuck again either Similar story with the break away bolts.

            As with all jobs, it's a little daunting, but really just adult lego but waaaaaaaaay more expensive and more of a pain when you're missing a piece

            If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

              hey - I had an issue with our Jetta - same thing. Turned out to be steering lock but in our case the barrel was also an issue.

              As much as it was painful, I ended up bringing it to a place here in Adelaide. Cost me $1400, but they put new parts and kept my original key (I think the barrel came from Germany).

              There are some great YouTube videos on how to fix it if you like... but it looked time consuming and complicated.... so I ended up paying.

              Supposedly it's a common issue for VW/Audis....

                Sweet. Yes it was PITA job. But good to know I avoided a $1400 fix.
                I will update my DIY maintenance record to show how much I saved.
