R32 Fuel Consumption

Hi All,
Im new to this forum and generally new to VWs, i have come from a honda/nissan past. But as it states i would like to know how many kms all you r32 owners are getting out of a tank and what sort of driving your doing as i'm very keen in purchasing a 3dr DSG R32 once i sell my 05 accord Euro Luxury (If anyone whats to swap please let me know).
I do about 50/50 highway traffic driving excluding putting the right foot down.

i get 450-500km from a tank of BP Ultimate 98 octane petrol. you should be getting at least the same if not more kms (being an MK5 DSG)

MkV has quite reasonably better fuel economy than the MkIV from what I've seen.
I get about the same fuel economy as Balkanac but bear in mind this only happens once you get a CAI on it.
Be interesting to see what the MkV boys have to say.

I have a 08dsg with about 8000kays on the clock. I am getting about 11-12lts/100kays. I do about 50/50 city/highway with the occasional redline. On long trips it gets to about 9-9.5lts/100kays. Not bad i think for a 3.2lts.

Have a DSG MY08.

Currently have completed 9300kms. Average so far has been 9.6l/100km
Usually get about 560 - 580km per tank...mostly freeway and local (suburban stuff). Wife drives the car carefully...I have fun.

On a long country run...have seen an average in the middle 8's (l/100km) at the posted limit (100 - 120km/h)

I guess it all comes down to how you drive it. If I had mine stuck in S all the time it would be in the high 12's. I live in Sydney and do a reasonable amount of city driving with a little mix of highway and I'm also around the 9.6l/100 after 15k.

I don't often go crazy in the car but from a set of lights it's not often a car gets away quicker than I do (unless it's a jerkoff thinking I'm trying to drag him...) so under 10's is reasonably achievable.

Possibly not but it would take the edge off performance - especially in the lower rev ranges due to the timing being wound back. Also it would probably use more fuel because you have to put the foot down more for the same performance.

He used to get 14L/100 & the car was really gutless up to 4000rpm. Running it on 98ron, the economy improved to 11L/100km & it had a lot more pull from the lights.

For the $200 a year extra that 98ron might cost, what's the point?

On my 1.8T Skoda factory spec is 95ron. I use 98ron because it uses less fuel & therefore is cheaper per km (not much but still cheaper).

If these cars can achieve a combined fuel economy of 10L/100 driving conservatively it pretty much ticks all the boxes for me.

Interesting... The wife has an Outback and while it's mostly short trip city drives, her consumption is close to 14L/100km. I wonder if her '99 2.5 Auto will like premium better?


On another note, as has been said fuel consumption is largely dictated by how you drive, although it's good to understand what the 'best' you could get would be. For me in the VR6 I average about 12L/100km and can get down to 8 or so on trips, but it's all about how I drive it (For reference I only use BP 98 in the VR6 and 91 in the Outback)


This then leads to the next question, how much difference can it make... well being anal like I sometimes am I whipped out Excel and put together a little spreadsheet and calculated a few things.

Lets start with some assumptions:

You travel 10,000km per year
Premium ( 98 ) fuel is 20c a litre more expensive than 91
Your fuel economy DOES NOT improve or get worse with different fuels.

At 10L/100km it would cost you $200 per year more to run 98.
At 15L/100km it would cost you $300 per year more to run 98.

As the margin between the two reduces of course this becomes less. Further, if your economy gets better by about 1.7L/100/km you will break even...



So IF going from 91 to 98 dropped fuel consumption from 14 to 11L/100km you are actually $242 a year better off on the premium

i do 11.8l/100 with highway and city combined.....i recon that not too bad for a 4Motion 3.2V6...

Mine is now up to 18,000 kms and has averaged 10.1 lt/100 kms since the day we took delivery. Most of the driving is suburban (but not stop start).

Quite economical if you keep your foot out of it.
