Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Someone filling a car with fuel is dangerous if done incorrectly, same applies.

Bmw and Holden is 5x120 (unless you go to older makes which can be 4x100 for bmw).
You will need to keep centre bore size, bolt/nut seat type, and bolt/stud length in mind.

Can run anything, 5x112 is more common as it's a oem option.
    Thanks for the info Dylan.

I think i might just pick up a supercheap set of rims in the correct stud pattern and offset and start saving for some custom order Simmons FR18's.

How wide can you go on the back of a Bora without stretching the tire too much?
    For example, a 9" wheel with a 245/40/18? Would 25et be about?

Just thinking out loud now lol. If i am way off, let me know

I'm assuming you are referring to Simmons here? Or just wheels in general?
I don't mind my cheap as possible wheels to be no name rims and i don't hink i would buy replica wheels of any sort.

In regards to the Simmons, my plan is to get some 18x8 front & 18x9"'s or 10"'s rear directly from Simmons. Not cheap though

        • Can put certain brand 225/40 on 9s and it's fine.
Depends on size. Can fit 265s on the back if you don't mind having a bit of space above the tyre. Fuzion and trickysimon have done that.

As for the new fr, they are now all single piece rubbish i believe. try to find some older ones from when they were actually made by Simmons, not tempe

Yeah i don't mind having space above the tire. It is actually how i would prefer it with the road conditions up here.

So Simmons are not Simmons anymore? No more 3 piece rims?
Tempe make them now? So they are made from second hand melted down Chinese alloy? Wassup with that?!

So if i can find the "old" style centers, can i get them rebuilt and resized in the "old" way?

            Comment

            • Not sure if they are still making 3 piece, but I doubt they would be if they are producing copy 1 piece versions at the same time.
If you can find some 3 piece centres then yes you can build them up as desired (as long as your wallet can take it)

              • Hey guys, im after a bit of advice regarding dealing with a wheel and tire company that sent me wheels that were an incorrect fitting?

The wheels in question were purchased to suit a VW Bora but have a CB of around 70(ish)mm and were not supplied with hub adapters.
Once fitted, they did not clear my brake calipers either.
I phoned them regarding the lack of hub adapters and i was told that if i did not know how to make them fit, i should not be jacking up a car. Not the right attitude!

Anyway, they are not aware of the clearance problems as of yet and want to know if it might have been a fault of mine by not specifying that they were for a 4Mo even though i told them that my car has the same specs as a Mk4 R32 Golf.

I have taken a heap of photo's to state my case with them later tonight via email.

Where do you guys think i stand?

EDIT: I did tell them they were for a V6 4Motion as it makes mention to it on the invoice.

                • You need hub rings not adapters. If they say it's for a bora it should hAve rings to suit.
Dunno if the brake clearance is even that much worse on the 4mo compared to say a 2lt.

If they say it's to suit a 4mo, it should do just that

                      Front: 17x9 et 35 with 15mm adapter = 20 205 40 17 (15mm needed to clear coilover)
Rear: 17x9 et 35 with 20mm adapter = et15 215 40 17 (no adapter needed but needed to look similar to the front)
Arch height to ground Front: approx 590mm
Arch height to ground Rear: approx 620mm - looks lower in pictures because there was some weight in there at the time

Pokes a fair bit (like 25mm front and 30mm rear)
Needs bigger rubber on the front I think
No rubbing on the inside of the guards at all - outside rubbing sometimes when cornering fast

Arch height to ground Front: wasnt able to measure the front at my house because the subframe kept getting held up by the ground. looking at the pics and compared to rear measurement id say 21"
Arch height to ground Rear: 21.5"

Camber: Front 1deg, but due to being pulled from the bottom it makes offsets more aggressive (approx the same as running a 10mm spacer/ 1deg extra in rear

                              • Finally had a chance to test fit my 18*8.5 ET35 wheels to my Bora 4mo.

The wheels do tuck nicely under the guards but the rear fit between wheel and rear spring seat is real tight - like 10mm gap tight. This was when the car was off the ground. My car is lowered so I suspect it'd smash against the spring seat during spring compression.

Would I be a complete fool if I made a small incision with an angle grinder on the spring seat?

I think camber adjustable arms are now mandatory for these wheels to fit, so maybe I can get away with a spacer to increase gap?
