      • they both have same side intercooler piping (twin pass cooling), which the air passes through twice, once through the top then through the bottom, or vice versa.
      • this is also utilising the existing piping at the back (from the turbo), but deleting the pancake pipe, saving unneccessary extra work re piping from the turbo and getting extra bits welded to try to match up to the DV and N75 etc at the tip. You can just totally leave those connections stock and untouched!!
      • have seemingly shorter piping runs/total length, which is meant to be much better, cooler, runs less near the engine and the top of the engine bay, and less connections for less chances of leaks..
      • they look like the piping would hide behind the bumper way better than 'single pass' kits like mine where the piping bends stick out at the left and right grilles, no matter what you do, you can't get the drivers side pipe away from the tow hook mount!!
      • The extra piping of 'single pass' or ebay piping kits also ends up in the road of accessing things like the starter motor, etc, etc, as piping wasn't originally meant to be on that side of the car, and past all those extra components, etc..

Firstly, the THS kit, at PSI tuning, which I like better because the air goes through the hotter 'top' part of the intercooler first (which is also behind the bumper, blocking air), then through the cooler bottom part of the intercooler, which is also totally open to fast flowing fresh air. Here's the link to it at PSI Tuning:

Secondly, there's another good twin pass kit from OCD/Darkside. The air goes through the bottom then the top on this one, but piping is slightly shorter, and seems to be able to be tucked away very neatly:

Also, a great intercooler seems to be the Seat Sport, and beefier rebuilds of it. I was told by OCD/Darkside that it doesn't fit behind the bumper of the MK4 Golf.. But if you could get it to fit, maybe the slightly thinner OEM one, it would by far be the best! It is also a twin pass cooler, piping would be similar to the above 2, and most importantly, it is massive and is known to work exceptionally well!!

      Seat Sport upgraded by Darkside:

Also, there are SO MANY single pass coolers out there which are much cheaper (just find your own piping/ebay piping kit), like these 2:
      Just Japs:
      Just Jap Auto Imports

      or Darkside has 3 sizes..
Darkside Developments - Universal Front Mount Intercoolers (FMIC) with 57mm (2.25") Inlet / Outlet

      Hope this helps..
Yea it helps alot, seen the pipes sticking out and wondered wether they would on my r32 bar. Going to get spot lights in the grills to cover the pipe work as im still on my p's will be deff looking into these! Cheers mate!

          • Yeah, I'm trying to decide on keeping the Votex valance, or getting an R32 front bumper.. decision needs to be before I paint it..

I'm also now on the lookout for a 2nd hand turbo back exhaust.. anyone?

Hey mate, intercooler looks good!! Just a note on the r32 bar. I would try and get a us spec one because I believe they are a little bigger because there is foam in between the re-bar and bumper. I got a euro spec copy from JOM and it's not really that much better than the stock bar. There is a guy on vwvortex selling abs copies for like $300 not sure about shipping though. Oh and single pass intercoolers ftw! I never liked the design of dual pass cores, plus half of its hidden behind the re-bar, no air-flow there. Just my 0.02c

              • Big thanks on that feedback there Lito, I am/was looking at a JOM front bar that I could pick up here in Sydney for around $300 (because I liked your one).. But you're saying it's not much better for covering/hiding the FMIC pipes?

I guess I depends on how thick the core is. The Godspeed one I had would fit behind the centre grill but the side grills needed to be trimmed for the pipes, the pwr core needed a lot of trimming to the centre grill, it's 85mm thick! I'll take a few pics of where I needed to trim tomorrow for you. These are the ones I would be looking at VWVortex.com - < Best MK4 Styling Options > NO PAYMENTS FOR 6 MONTHS! • Thanks Lito, yeah, I've already emailed him a few days ago, and he apologised but the shipping was pretty high for the front bumper to Australia..

                    The response from OptikWerks:
"Shipping for the bumper is expensive, to get it to Sydney is $190 in shipping
The side skirts I can get there for $82".

So it nearly doubles the price, and with conversion is up around $450 AUD, even before paint for just the front bumper...

Hmmm what to do... It does look 'tougher' at the moment, but I don't really want my pipes hanging out for ever, that's too much of a cop magnet for me... hmmm

Maybe I'll try to get some side on shots of how much my pipes are sticking out and you can tell me if you think the JOM bumper will help..? I'll measure the core too, but after a decent whack of Dremel work, that's fine now.

I DO like all of that OptikWerks stuff though!!
