Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Restoring my Golf VR6

After reading through others Mk3 threads i thought id start my own. im not sure how often i'll be able to update
(Uni > car > build thread) but i'll try.

i bought this 1994 Golf VR6 4 weeks ago off of gumtree for $400 as my first car (that I've owned). when we went to have a look at the car the interior was pretty dirty and messed up the exterior was pretty dirty and messed up with a bit of work to do on the front end, and it had a coolant leak, over heated and when she started it, the first time in three months, there was also a bad knocking/tapping noise but decided to buy it any way and hoped it was just a hydro lifter noise . i got it home and took the leaky sump off and had a look for metal shavings and at the bottom end luckily it looked ok . so now im just waiting on the thermostat/coolant pipe kit and oil cooler from ECS and i should be able to give it another start with some new oil and hopefully the knocking noise will go away.

    some pics.

That's an awesome buy, especially if there isn't anything seriously wrong with it although that knock is not a good sign. Even if the engine needs some serious work you've still done well.
    Goodluck with the build!

it sounds a bit like this VR6 noise after rebuild - YouTube.
and she said she hadn't heard it before so im hoping its just that the oil has drained from the lifters after sitting around for three months and not some bad bottom end knock. so i guess ill find out after i put the new parts on and run it for a bit.

That's mad cheap! Once the issues are sorted this will be awesome. Good to see someones going to fix it up instead of scrap it. Black pearl magic is an awesome colour aswell... Although I may be slightly biased.

ya for that price you can spend a lot on parts and still be a head. and the black will be nice as long as the A/C works and i dont get sick of washing it all the time

also how hard would it be to change the lifters?

Mum just got home and brought some goodies from the post office.

just a bit of an incentive to get my uni work done

                            Mine sounded like this once.

Was a snapped intermediate shaft. (cause of flashing oil light, as oil pump isn't working)

                            Could be wrong but.
