    Phew, that's good to hear.

Yeah I'm guessing so... can't seem to unwind it, might have to throw the new compressor kit in earlier then planned

        • Anyone know what these should be connected too?
Found both hidden under the air box.

The first runs to the maf loom.

The second runs into one of the main harnesses to or from engine/ecu

          • The green/brown is abs on fire wall.

The white/red brown/white is the temp sensor for dash on front lower grille

            • Ah sick.
Cheers. That's external air temp just for display reasons rather then management/running of the car?
Wonder if the sensor is still on the golf bumper

              • Yeah external for cluster only. Ecu temp is on passenger side of intake manifold near the vac line for fpr. I extended my iat with 22 gauge wires to sit behind the cluster temp sensor. (Mk4 iat)

It clips into the grille and sticks out. Looks very similar to the abs sensor which sits kinda up behind the grille

                • Ah cool. Not essential then. Had the air box out already so ran the wires in that direction. No luck on the sensor so hopefully dad can find it on the golf bar for later.
Tucked the abs one away as.
Air box back in and it fits much better this time. Even found what I think is one of the orginal rubber straps so out with the cable ties we had folding it down.

Seems something fishy is going on with the passenger side mount. Was freely moving on the new bfi mounts so pulled it out to find the bolt had some thread damage right down at the bottom. Been trying to take the rest of the mount out to investigate but it's a nightmare to crack the last bolt.

Nipped up all the a/c lines so nothing is flapping around for roady.
Wheels back on after Pat borrowed them for the cab.

Hopefully can find the right arch liner screws tomorrow night as I seem to be messing whatever holds the bar to the liner.

Next up will be the r32 pickup, sump, and a fresh gasket. Hopefully that's the last of the oil leaks

                  • So found some old pics from when I rebuilt the head on my old phone.
as suspected, no valve steam seals. IDIOT!

any one had any luck with floating the valves with air pressure
or am I able to turn the motor to hold individual valves while installing the seal?

had it suggested that it can also work by feeding some string in the spark plug to fill the chamber to hold the valve up.

I really cbf pulling the head off and replacing bolts again

                      • lazy would be pulling the head off. but costs more replacing gaskets and head studs.

                        • Hi Dylan,

You want to get an old spark plug then drill straight through the middle of it. Once thats sorted you need to get a small hose and clamp and put it over the ceramic section of the plug clamp up and connect up to an air compressor than you can pull the springs to do the seals with compressed air holding the valves shut. You'll only need around 30psi. Don't let the reg run over 40. Make sure the piston is on top dead too and manually brace the crank pulley with a spanner against the ground, subframe or whatever.

For the springs removal you need a lever style tool like this - Amazon.com: CTA Tools 2235 Overhead Valve Spring Compressor Kit: Home Improvement

                          Hope that makes sense.

                          Cheers,
                          Patrick.

got one of those exact tools in the post actually.
im a bit scared about floating the valves on air pressure. have heard about people loosing pressure and dropping the valve. not sure if feeding something into the camber is the way to go for me or not.

I dont re call the space, but if floating the valve with the piston TDC and it drops. does it fall right through or is there still enough valve showing at the top of the guide to pull it back though?

                            • so sorted the rear gear box side mount. think the wrong bolt was too long and causing it to bottom out before tightening. engine is nice and secure again.
got stuck in to the sump to find 4 or 5 bolts were missing... forgot about those. will leave the old one attached until I can pick up some new bolts during the week

                              • So r32 pickup fitted.
R32 sump on, but think I made a mistake using a mk3 sump gasket when I shouldnt have had one at all... Bolts won't torque up so will see if it leaks. If it does sump off and give it another clean and refit with no gasket.
While laying under the car getting annoyed I spotted something hanging out of the bottom of the old oil pickup... Have a feeling it's bits of old timing gear (hopefully old!!!) Will post pics soon
