How many can u bring back???
There is tonnes of Mk2s here!! there is even a monthly magazine dedicated to only Mk2s.. Tend to be more popular around Tokyo and up in hokkaido. Could Import many. But for some reason the owner would like to keep an eye on the flock. So he won't shift many overseas.

Can ship cars from Japan to Aus for around 2g RORO...roll on roll off (not container).... only pre 88 can be reg without full compliance.
so they would only be good for race or parts. I honestly only saw about 6-7 pre 87 Golfs. one was the ex race car with the stupid looking bonnet. That is an 85 GLI.
He does have around 80-90 more cars in a lot, further out in the country. All those ones are parts cars.
I'm hoping to go see those when I go to pick up a digifiz.

How long are you staying tehre for? If you have owned the car for 12 months plus, you can import any year model from my understanding, without compliance (Stupid I know, but that's the way it works. How is it different from owning the same car for 12 months over just purchasing it.. I have no idea!)

caveat: You can only import 1 vehicle every 12 month period.

You'd reckon he's got more MK2's in his collection than all the current MK2's in Australia
MK2 - *Insert list of dealer purchased extra's/standard features here*
80 series - The MK2's BIG, Sooty, polar opposite...

I'm pretty much here for good. Been here for nearly 6 months. yeah, no compliance if its a personal Import.
Possibly import my GTI here after I decide exactly whats going on. But I need another car in the mean time.
