Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Forgive me, I tried answering my questions from previous photos but no luck.
Is the charger cooled/lubricated only by engine oil? Or is it also cooled from engine coolant aswell?
Would a 68mm pulley make the charger work harder and thus get worn quicker?

      Thanks

      • The charger is lubed and cooled by the engine oil. There is pipe from the side of the head. It doesn't need a great deal of oil but a G60 runs really high oil temps, especially if you run them hard. Regular oil changes help to keep chargers in good condition.

I fitted a Mocal oil cooler to mine and even then on a trackday the oil would get up to 130 if you let it. I deleted the water/oil heat exchanger at the same time and in winter it struggled to get up to temperature.

A smaller pulley will make the charger spin quicker and therefore make more boost. This will reduce the service intervals accordingly. For the cost of a rebuild kit, it makes sense to do them every 2-3 years IMO. They aren't that complicated to work on and there's not that many parts in them when you strip one down.

This is where I got my G60 info back in 2000. http://forums.vwvortex.com/forumdisp...0-Engine-Forum

          • Started attacking the engine bay an working my way thru the issues.

Also trying to knead the washer bottle with the hole.

Also, im puzzled to figure out what to do with the plates.

The rear has the old surround for the euros, but if i take it of, there is two holes in the body for where to screw it in, which sit outside the width of my plates

thinking of using a Heckblende to cover it.

Any suggestions. Also looking to put some black plastic for something to cover the holes on the front, where do i get it from, tried Bunnings, useless as usual.

Here are some photos just for funzies

            • Good luck trying to find the keck blende.. Very rare!

The holes in the front, I'd be making up a backing plate for the number plate the same width, and bolt that on. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with mine when I get it done.

              • Heckenblende's don't look good on big bumper cars and if you find one it'll be overseas. They are delicate so there will be a high chance of it getting broken in transit.
Can't you just get some of these euro style plates?

                • Already got the other ones, said they'd be wider. I don't want to change to euros cause it will probably be $500+ just to change.

                  • Black body Undersealer you could get at Robbos at Campsie, or supercheep. It comes it a 4L tin and goes on with an old paintbrush like tar.

Bit of black sealastic in the bumper holes, or cover it with a plate holder.

Good to see you hooking in on the old girl.
