The 16v block has oil squirters and a few other goodies that make it better than an 8v block. 16v pistons mean big compression. 8v head means it looks stock on the outside. It will never produce the HP of a 16v but it looks stock and will go pretty hard. Kind of a "best of both worlds" sorta thing.
It won't. Sure you can make your engine produce more than A STANDARD 16v, but when push comes to shove, on a completely performance level in modified form (Atmo VS Atmo or FI VS FI).. You'll lose.
Thats an old pic from when it had no engine. also had 5 stud only half dones, as you can see the rear is still 4 stud.

any way, it pings now, just need to sort out cam timing. so i have to control myself!!! when we were tuning it.... my tacho would come up at least 1000 rpm short.. dont wanna go any further until the cam gear is sorted. omg...
it still hauls ass and i dont rev past 3500...
Im a little confused here
Your doing cam timing . Shouldnt the cam timing have been sorted when the engine was built ?
You have a timing light . I assume your adjusting the igntition timing ?
If it is getting tuned what are the a/f readings like ?

Because the head is decked so much, the cam timing is a little out of sync with the bottom end.
Adjustable cam gear will sort the problem, but last week we were trying to tune it in a shed with a tin roof in a ridiculous rainstorm.
At the moment is is 2degrees retarded on the cam, which has moved the powerband and made the pinging better. Next I reckon try 4degrees and hang on
The builder of the engine is in Sydders next week and will doubtless make the thing sing
Its already pretty fruity for an 8v and the lumpy idle is awesome.
