Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I think we are all interested in getting a firm grip on shipping costs from UK to Australia.

Karman shipping website was very informative, also ah a shipping calculator.

Just one more thing bothering me. Were 16V's originally sold in Australia and if not would that be an issue when importing one?

Also, does the car have to be standard or can it have mods already on it, like lowered suspension or cosmetic changes.

Sweetlands has been broken, such a shame.

Walshydub, where are you posting from ? The UK or Australia ? Have you got Australian Residency or Citizenship ?

Mine is a '92 model so i had to of owned it for a year before import approval was granted, with a pre '89 model you'll still need approval but you can buy one and apply staight away for approval.

Mine is on Coilovers and had 16" RS on it at the time, wasn't an issue really, the headlights were too low for Australlian Design Rules (ADR's) so it was raised to pass then lowered when i got home. You should be alright with a Mk2.
You'll have to have child seat anchor points put in, and make sure you get one with no rust, they are strict on rust. You may have to have a 3rd brake light put in also, but i got away with that one.
Which city are you going to ship the car to ?

why go all the way to the UK to get one, we have loads of them just across the ditch in good old NZ. Seems like Aussie got the short end of the stick when it comes to decent VAG cars. Something to do with them wanting you all to drive
              Falcons & Commodores maybe??

No (or bugger all) 3 door Mk1, Mk2, Mk 3 or Mk 4 3 doors or Corrados. We have them here...My brother is selling a mint Mk2 16v but wants good dosh for it....

Hope that don't rub it in too much.

There are alot of 2 stroke GP style motorcycles that you never got over there either ... All these bikes and 3 door VAG machines are here in abundance.

The Mk 2 in the first pic has now been fully re-built and is sporting VR6 wide track and a 1.8t.... I'll try and find a good pic of the other black 16v that is for sale.

I always check out Trademe for NZ Dubs for sale. What other sites could we use?

It actually costs the same to ship a car from NZ as it does from the UK!!

My take on it was there are a lot more Mk2s in the UK and so more to choose from and cheaper.

NZ and UK imports would be subject to the same import regs, so only 88 models or earlier.

Yeah I reckon its to make everyone drive Fords and Holdens too. People would leave in droves if they realized how much better to drive VAG cars are

but theres the added advantage that you can go across personally and organise the shipping if you dont have contacts in the UK

Still sounds expensive, couple of flights, a hire car, some food and hotel. No-way thats gonna be less than $500. Plus the fun of finding a shipper in a couple of days.

I`ll just use my UK contacts I reckon

if you organised it all properly from over here, it could be do-able. how much for just the shipping from NZ? 2k-ish?

Cars from the long white cloud would also be prone to less rust than UK..?

Would I be right in geussing this? Cause if they weren't you may as well buy it cheaper from the UK, if you have to restore it the same amount..?

Are they cheaper in the UK though? I dont know the answer to that...

Yes I think they would be less prone to rust here as we don't salt our roads...
You don't see rusty golfs here...

Trade me is probably the best but you can keep an eye on the damaged car auctions at Turners. The Trade and Exchange. Auto Trader & vask.org.nz.

If any of you found one, I could look at it for you & poss look into shipping options.
