Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Importing Mk2's

This old chestnut again but..............being a pom, new to the country i am looking at buying a MK2 golf and all i have come up with is 5 doors (and autos).

I have read the previous thread on this issue but last post was a year ago. Have there been any updates on this issue?
Has anyone brought a good one over?
I saw a imported MK2 3door on ebay a few months ago, but it was a non starting rust bucket, so it is possible to get 'em over.

I regularly look on UK ebay and there are soooo many MK2's on there. Its just so tempting!!

Here we go, anything past 1989 is a no go
Why would you want to get one of those pommy 2 door rattling pigs anyways
The cars that are here are a very good build quality not to mention 4 doors look good & are much more useful, if you want a 2 door by an audi tt
The price of the Australian mk2's is very good even to good because of all the negative press they get. You don't have to use much imagination or $ to improve the performance
I could elaborate for hours on this, but there is a 1985 2door for sale here for about $7500, if you think a1985 2 door is worth that much?????????

Its a preference thing. I have always owned and loved the look of a 2 door.

Yeah a 5 door can and do look good but then i might as well get a MK3 or MK4 but i want an individual car built on a solid, good looking platform.

            A 1985 2 door probably isn't worth $7500 but a mint condition 16v would be.
If i wanted an Audi TT i wouldn't be asking this apparently silly question.

Not all british Mk2's are 'rattling pigs' and i would find a minter to bring over otherwise then it wouldn't be worth it.

All i am asking for is the benefit of experience on whether it can be done or not and what obstacles might be faced.

It's just too hard mate. Save your money and build a 3 door MK3 with a 1.8T in it.

I don't think it's too much hassle just expensive. Don't expect any change from $10K imo

Thats another can of worms. Are there any 3door Mk3's or are they just as rare?

no where near as rare mate, but they only came in the base model CL and some are ridiculously cheap as they are high kms cars now, so basically perfect for 1.8t conversions

You know i didn't even look into that possibility because i've never seen any, but you've planted a seed.

Still would love a to get a mint MK2 16v over here but if the import alone is 10k on top of up to 4000 pounds just for the car, its a bit much.

Just have to pick some winning numbers tonight.

I reckon get two in a container and split the cost.
You can bring em without restriction, as long as they are pre 89.
Sciroccos and Caddys are ok too. No corrados or 2 door vr6s.
You cound get a cheap 8v GTI and just sling a 16v in when it gets here.
