Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

You can bring em without restriction, as long as they are pre 89.
Sciroccos and Caddys are ok too. No corrados or 2 door vr6s.
You cound get a cheap 8v GTI and just sling a 16v in when it gets here.
Or sqeeze a few 16v engines in the container.

Still would love a to get a mint MK2 16v over here but if the import alone is 10k on top of up to 4000 pounds just for the car, its a bit much.

Just have to pick some winning numbers tonight.
I meant all up inc the car. Seen some tidy mk2's still around 2000 pounds.

Its not really an issue of wether its cheaper or not, although cost is a big issue, its about getting a good car over here that otherwise wouldn't have been available.

For example a really mint 3 door 16v.

Problem with UK cars is they are rot boxes.

Yeah fair enough, its an option. But..........

$3000 for the car another $2000 at least to source and fit a 16v.
Thats before you get to the interior, suspension, wheels/tyres, brakes interior, big bumper conversion. All of which (i'm guessing) will have to be imported. Even then it still won't drive and feel the same as an original.

You see i am looking along the lines of owning a car like this.........

And yes it is possible to find them without rust etc. Just look in the back of last months PVW. A minter with only 36,000 on the clock for under 5k

                        So near and yet............................

when you see all of these as well

                        http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/...&submit=Search

You see why i ask if its possible to get 'em here.

There are some awesome roads in the hinterland that are just begging to be torn up by a 16v.

Also you reckon you could bring over a Rallye or ED1 G60 from germany?

Only if you converted it to RHD, you could do that over here if you sourced the bits and shipped them over inside the car.
Have a look at www.karmanshipping.co.uk for more info on shipping, tax etc, theres plenty of links in there.

I would look for a pre '89 car and import it, I did it and have no regrets. Bang for buck it still works out as a cheap car and I can't think of anything that would be as good for the money, not even close.

I wouldnt import either of them cos....

                              1, they are both LHD
2, Rallyes rust pretty bad and you wont get any rallye panels out here.
3, both G60's, which without servicing tend to go pop
4, who in Aus can service a G-Ladder?

                              16v mk2's me thinks

i think the LHD option might be one worth considering. all the parts needed to convert it would be easily under 1k.
