  • Gave the valves and all a good clean too, now for a bit of shopping

Few questions though, techtonic tuning doesnt seem to have mk3 1.8 piston rings. Are the mk2 1800 rings the same? And does the mk2 1.8 headgasket and gasket set work on the mk3?
Does the 190mm clutch hold up with the 1.8 motor?

Definately keen on this. Might be abit harsh for a daily but hopefully can get used to it. What are the side effects of such an aggressive cam?

      • Piston rings are likely the same but best to be sure. A quick / lengthy google session should tell you if the part numbers are the same or different. Also, techtonics probably isn't the best place to get rings. When I got mine I bought them Oem, from a eBay supplier in Europe. Then again, I've never used any techtonics internals so aren't the best to ask.

As for high duration cams for daily driving, the main side effect is no power or torque until 5000 rpm. It's like slapping on a big turbo with heaps of lag.

Why not buy a new cam? They can be sourced for around 350ish and then you have complete choice of duration, lift, LCA, overlap etc etc.

With a big cam, get some valve springs. Autotech supply a great set for around 100, rated to 8000 rpm.

Nice head btw. Need to see her again

        • No way would I use that size cam on the street
I have that one just a little bigger and consider it race only

I would ook for something around 256 advertised maybe 270 if you are really keen, and lobe centre around 108

I was kind of kidding, it doesn't really work below about 5000 RPM. Not a street cam at all.

In any case it's gone up to Queensland to go into a race car now.

                  • Also in need of a crank v-belt pulley, mk1 waterpump pulley and a clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. If anyone has one lying around. Preferably 210mm but anything that will work with the 1.8 and 4speed.

                      • Update!
So i grew a pair and decided to pull a 210 clutch from a mk3 at a wreckers (shoutout to browneye for being a boss and assisting me on my journey!)
Everything seemed fine throwing it all together back at home and managed to get the motor back in in no time.

Spanner checked everything and wire it all up to start it.
After i prime the oil and get it all ready, i go to start it and fired up like a new car!

..one problem though.. noticed sparks flying out of the tdc port on the gearbox.. DAMN

so box off again, to see what the issue is. Turns out there is a tab in the casting in the bellhousing that was binding on the flywheel.. so out comes the grinder haha

                        • The proper solution would be a 5 speed swap mate... I got some flanges if you want to take it down that road, but you would need a mount, which is the real trouble. Hope the clutch performs alright, can't see why it wouldn't.

Just roof and demister to go?
