next step is to change out the pinion and crown wheel to lower the gearing down a little as i reckon the car should be capped to around 220 kph @ 8500 rpm as most of the time we never really get the opportunity to get long straights and the quicker acceleration will net much bigger time gains at lower speeds with a lightweight quick revving motor than a few seconds at 220+ kph

3.94 is about right to do that depending on tyre size. Otherwise 4.25 is available. Cheapest place I found for the crown and pinion is

Parts4vws.com and Parts4Audis.com - 4.25 020 Ring & Pinion I got my 3.94 from there. Cheapest way to get a 3.94 is to find a box here with it already in of course.

Codes 2H and 4K are ideal as they're also close ratio.

You can right down to 5.07 with VWMS parts but the price is very steep.

If I won tattslotto I'd buy one of these....

funny you mention that site Pete, i've shopped there before and have got them bookmarked for when the bank account recovers a little and is about the ratio i'm looking at as i have a 020 FF box in it running 15" rims and 215/50R15 R Comps

I ran an FF box initially and found it a bit sluggish in second out of corners, but that was with a tired 1.8GX on K-Jet.

Same box seems pretty happy in another MK1 powered by an ADZ 1.8 running a Weber as a street car.

Close ratio boxes have a slightly lower second gear which give the a bit more punch.

            My current setup is 4K innards in a CHB casing along with a 3.94 R&P and a wavetrac diff. Ratios are 3.45 / 2.12 / 1.44 / 1.13 / 0.89 Tyres are 185/60/14 R888 I'd hit about 220 @ 8.5K if I had the horsepower to get there.

(The 4K did have a 3.9R&P in it of course, that's destined for another box, it's a long storey.......)

cool, sounds good pete, i'm going to stick with the lightweight 020 boxes for a bit as i have 5 of them and if i start to break them i will be forced to build my own stronger internals as i have the means and can be twisted into the budget but thats a big if and if the things break regularly. And 250 Hp the dream for the motor but it will be a wait and see scenario as the motor will have all the pieces to the puzzle to get there depending on the tune.

I think 200hp at the flywheel is very reasonable!

Sorry to inform both you fella's that Mike and Kristen Potter the owners of parts for vw's in Temecula actually shut the doors about mid last year.

I managed to buy a few of the last items Mike had for sale while over at the Bonelli Mk1/2 meet in November.

Mike is currently working for VW again and may still be able to get some of the trick parts, let me know if there is something hard to find you need to go racing with and I will get the meassage thru.

There still looking at selling the business as it exists now, so it yet may rise from the ashes.
                  Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

                  Cheers,

decided to fit some of the stash of parts i have lying around so the golf gets new tail lights and LED globes all round

and for the hell of it you can't really ignore a peice of tail like this, the mistress that cnsumes the rest of my time away from the missus

next fit up the BIXENON headlights for light like the mk1 has never had before

Porsche and VW. Makes for a nice combination

Re the power target, you'll not get far beyond 215-220hp without bigger valves and this is a reeeeal stretch. Once you start getting significantly beyond 200-210, it gets very hard and expensive and the compression you need (into the very high 12 - low 13 scale!) really starts to test things out (like your eye with setting the mechanical timing!!!).

I wouldn't chase power figures so much unless you're doing it for 'sport' (which is a good enough reason I might add ). You really start to sacrifice torque and the only way to get it 'back' is through gearing for the most part, and ultra light internals to get the through the rev scale as quick as possible. I think you can get a nice 220hp and 230Nm without going to stratospheric revs!! Should be enough to show the door to a few things in your class

I've PM'd you a link for some parts you'll want... I mean need (this is what you tell your wife, as I do!)

                      Keep up the great work

yeah I am kinda hooked on the german theme hey as we just bought and A5 for the missus so now the family has a 09 Polo, 77 Golf, 88 911, 2010 A5. The 911 is a great car to cruise in especially with the modded 3.6L motor on board but the golf is my pick everytime, i just love the classic look, sound and smell of it. Yeah 250Hp was my f@#k yeah number but i'm not majorly fussed if i don't make it, the rally car is all about point to point so it's the way it puts it's power down that i'm interested in (and getting the thing slowed again!) cheers for all the encouragement. Just gotta head back to the farm and keep building bits for it and hopefully we'll get a run soon. As soon as it's running i'll post some vids of the thing on the dyno (only going to 3500 rpm so i can putt 1000km on it to bed everything in) then a full 8500 rpm run

few shots of one of the little 8v's last competitive outings, started at 5pm ended at 9:30pm so it was pretty hard to see by the end. Thanks to Anton for the pics

What's hanging in the second last driving photo?
