Luke the VW fitment black diamond 280 discs should be here mid May, think there is a few sets of std ones left also.

From memory the only issue with using the earlier GTI calipers spaced out on the 280 disc is that the pads actually spill over the outside radius of the disc itself, not by much though. Thought about making an adaptor for this years ago but just went and got the 256 / 280 calipers instead

I have a set of VR6 calipers here ( thanks MattyT ) and will check them against the std corrado and 16V scirocco caliper for offset spacing differences, the differenc may well be just in the pad thickness'/ offset .

So does any of that make sense ?????
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,
    Grant...

Early and Late VR6s have different Offset Disks.
Early ones are the same offset as cupra.
Later brakes have a bigger caliper and have a cage aroound them and the disks are a different offset.

Early VR6 caliper will bolt straight onto GL Hubs and work with the Cupra Disks to give you 280mm on any Mk2, 3 or SEAT.

The Mk1 GTI brakes Wade, which are stamped VWII on them also come on the Mk3s and 2s and SEATs which have the carrier built in. You can remove the caliper, but you need the VW bolt on adaptor to fit em to a Mk1.

They are designed for vented brakes and the similar looking ones which are stamped VWI are for non vented and wont open enough for a vented disk.

That is why the vented and non vented pads are the same shape, but have different thicknesses.

The VW Carrier is the missing piece and has been unavailable for years.

I agree with Pete Jones, I reckon an adaptor that bolted to the Mk3 caliper and the Mk1 hub would be the grouse.
Cheap and easy parts and pads and would allow 254mm and 280mm brake conversions.

If anyone wants to make a few sets of them, I will put my hand up for 3 sets right now.

          Sweet bloke, thanks for clarifying.

And yea, I'd put money down for two sets if one adapter can be made for the fitment of either mk3 or mk1 GTI calipers!

Yep you all could go and make up that said adaptor plate but i bet nobody on here actually goes and does it because it is damn hard work and needs alot of time to get perfect as it is your brakes after all. Was going to make up a very easy and cheap adaptor for this kit as i already have the adaptor to copy (the tsr kit has custom offset disc bell hieghts to work with the adaptor plate) to keep the cost down for everyone but hey if everyone wants mk3 calipers (more cost again) then i won't bother and i'll leave setup and race pads on my Dads Diesel. Hope to see some pics of these mk3 brakes on your mk1's soon. Would be beter just to make an adaptor for the mk5 brakes and go all the way with big modern brakes and ABS. Now that is worth doing.

Wade, i'm putting the vr6 brakes on my race car to better utilise the brake surface area available on 280 discs instead of the smaller pad area on mk1 calipers thats all as i reckon there are still seconds to gain in the braking zone.

Now i'm upgrading to VR6 280mm brakes and am trying to figure out what to do with the near new 280 upgrade kit. The Kit uses STD MK1 GTi calipers with special offest black diamond combination discs and a machined adaptor plate. Just seeing if people here are interested in getting some more adaptors machined up (probably donate the design to roccodingo) and i'll get in some more discs. Beauty of this package is excellent stopping power without needing to upgrade the master cylinder or booster to get the most out of it (for the record i did both as it is a rally car but works great on my dads diesel right now which is stock). This is a great low cost (about $350 ish) upgrade which really performs on the street and at the track. Let me know what you think.

I remember talking about this problem with Loon ages ago.

I think there would be more merit in adapting the mk2/3 hubs to work well in the mk1 chassis - because then you can use all the easy bigger brake options without anything tricky.

The main difficulty with this is that most of the mk2/3 hubs are for power steering, and have a short steering arm.

I was thinking once upon a time that theres likely an off the shelf tie rod end you can buy that has an offset large enough to counteract the difference in moment arm to the hub somewhat. you could have slight quicker steering and better brakes.

                  I dunno.

Just reviving an old thread, any more update on running larger brakes on the mk1s, via an OEM option as opposed to buying kits?

Anyone done anything over the years?

On mine I'm fitting 280mm disks off a Seat Cupra with callipers off an old Vauxhall or Opel. It's supposed to be a straight swap with no machining needed or adapter plates.

You are correct. This is my setup...

Callipers and carriers are off a Holden calibra (opel/vauxhall import) v6 or 16v turbo (i cannot remember) and have enough room to accommodate for 288mm discs. Shame vw don't make em that big in a 4 stud.

Here's a pic of the callipers

and the necessary shoulder bolts to mount them (the carriers have a 12mm hole but the mk1 hubs require a M10)

All else that is needed is some G60 corrardo discs.

George, I'll whip a wheel off for you at the next mk1 meet and you can have a squizz, so you'd better get around to organising one

EDIT: You'll need to get some mk4 polo break lines to connect everything up correctly. It's fairly self-explanatory

They pull up fantastically well mate. They are a 54mm piston which is the same as a VR6 caliper, and the pad has excellent disc coverage.

Are you seriously considering selling George? Is there another mk1 we don't know about?
