After hearing how much of a difference it made on EndlessMk1's car, I beefed up the lower stress bar with a diagonal brace back to the rear control arm mounting points, and a bar between the 2 control arm mounting brackets.
My welder was playing up so don't look at my welds, but I can definitely say it does tighten up the front end - it feels sharper into turns and feels more solid and stable. Hardly feels like a mk1 anymore!
started prep on strut towers to weld next week, gave the dub its first reall test today in real bad peak hour and up the hills and it didnt miss a beat, temp stayed down even thought it was a cracker of a day temps wise.
bought new tyres 195/40/16 today and fitted them to 16x7.5 and 16x8.5 .a bit of a strech.if moderator can re-open my thread in wheels section i can keep interested people with updates. have a look at the photos.looks better in real life...http://photobucket.com/wheels_03
pulled and sprayed the front bumper, cleaned up the terminals for horns and indicators and put it all back together. Also found a loose fuel-line connection whilst at the carwash, after a good blast of the engine bay(no wonder it wouldn't start !!)

Fiddled with Vacuum lines, changed some, blocked some off and the car is idling better, but has more lag...
FPR is getting replaced tomorrow at this stage, it does not hold pressure which I feel may be causing some surge and also hard starting. See if that being replaced makes a difference.
Now to block off the holes in head, fit the weber and manifold, wire up, driveshafts, passenger seat to be put back in, more wiring... one day it will work
