What you can do now is ditch the MAF grid, as it is there to smooth out airflow over the MAF sensor after the 90 degree bend out of the stock lid, and it seems reasonably restrictive. See my first tinker thread. Modshack reckon it's 22% restrictive.

Thanks for the writeup. Sounds like they are made at minimal cost given the thin walls, and they have obviously tweaked the inlet noise, as my closed Modshack is almost too loud to be honest, be fine if I was half my age! Bummer about the thin walls, but you could always just add some insulative tape to the lower front near the radiator, and the side near the hot fuel pump. Guess the boring old Modshack still has some benefit, as being made from phenolic, it's about as insulative as they come.

Still, happy to swap, the APR "looks" far better to me! I assume it's just a K&N style element?

Care to point me in the right direction in regards to where I can find the part about ditching the MAF grid? You have 3 tinkering threads with so many pages I could be here all day looking. Yes its a typical K&N element.

I did this also to receive a notable increase in performance.

Ok I'm interested. How do you de-grid your MAF grid?

You have to remove it from the car and deconstruct it. It is not reversible, once it is off it is not going back on. Just take your time and be careful, it all becomes clear once you start pulling it apart how it works. I did not do a DIY. sorry.

So you don't need to physically cut it or dremel the grille off? It can be disassembled? Anyone got a photo of what part I'm actually supposed to remove? Is it this thing? ( sorry Greg I stole your photo )

I had to from memory cut something, but not with a dremel. It was a long time ago.

Mine came out in a simlar look to Greg's.

Here are the differences between mine stock and with the modshack and MAF removed

It was on a DynoDynamics dyno, however it was a 4WD version and a different location so figures are not 100% accurate.

Interesting the difference in the smoothness of the curves.

and for comparison the old chart.

Yep that's it. If you pull out the MAF housing, the front "grid" is held in place by the three rear tail fins, and you can remove it in a replaceable piece if you carefully lever the plastic holding the rear tailfin "ring" in place. I just snipped mine off, as there was no way this was going back in!

Ok I'll give it a go on the weekend - hope it runs ok after otherwise it sounds like I'll be up for a new MAF.

Let us know how you go Poyta.

I want to remove my MAF grid but I want to be able to re-install it.

Unless I buy another MAF part that that will be hella expensive. I doubt I can buy one without the MAF sensor in it.

I think you can get a new MAF pretty cheap from Ebay these days - they look to be a standard BOSCH item. I'll let you know how it goes and whether its reversible. I'm guessing even if you cut it out you may be able to glue it back.

Sweet. Will confirm a part number though.

Glue? haha. I'll leave that for the MK1 owners

I never needed to put it back on mine. As far as bang for back it's worth the risk.

                                Even when reverting to stock?

Considering mine's still having hissy fits since the injectors went in I ain't gonna be ripping stuff out at yet.
