Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

  • don't bother with an intake. the 550 dollars your spending could go towards a good ecu tune. or if your really keen bigger injectors, bigger turbo, etc.

Greg, you seem very intelligent and very inventive, serious. I've loved this thread and would love to be as exploratory with my FSI as you have been with your GT TDI.

The comment I wanted to make is are you aware that mixing napthalene and any sort of fuel you are making a crude version of napalm!

      Cheers,

Thanks for the kind words. Less need to explore the Golf R engine as much, it puts out truckloads of power from the factory! Project TDI has been a challenge for me, as I've not tinkered with a diesel before, and I have learnt a heap. I feel a bit partial to the oiler as well, for Carformance was born from it, and it's looking pretty serious now thanks to Viezu.

As for intelligent, well, I don't post up *everything*.....

The funny thing is that napth in diesel should be counter productive. Cetane in diesels differs to Octane in Petrol in that it is a rating of resistance to ignite, as opposed to octane being resistance to detonation. Cetane is basically the fuels ignition delay. Higher Cetane diesels have a shorter delay, which is what you want, as diesels ignite "late" compared to a spark plug engine. Napthalene actually lowers the Cetane rating, making the fuel take longer to ignite ( theoretically ) so it should not work - but all I can say is I have been running the Viezu Motorsport tune without any fuel additives, then put the 3 balls in last tankfull and holy crapola it was just mental. Level pegs with a new XR8 actually! Just ludicrous for a tractor, still with a super restrictive DPF. I aim to put it on the dyno as it is now, just to see where it is at before the sports DPF testing.

All this said, I have no long term idea as to what doing this does to the engine, DPF or anything really - just that the EGT's are similar, the car runs like the clappers, and regens are no different. That and the fact my stock DPF core is marked for the bin anyhow.....

Need to start my final thread, Carformance and Viezu has been taking up all my time ( and money ) and then some, but I'm determined to get the tractor finished this year!!

          • Greg do you recommend removing the EGR valve? I'm thinking I'll go for it. You removed the intake flap as well right? What and where did you replace it with to prevent run-away?

Also what difference does the water/meth spray have? Have you logged the intake manifold temps? I'm assuming the ECU supplies more fuel when it senses that there is a lower intake temp.

            • Try 'A Gasket' first... 3mm Stainless Steel with 10mm hole
              \( O ) o\====(\X/)=TDI=/o ( O )/ 2011 Jetta Mk5 125TDI - Squidly

              • Yeah thats the other option and it would keep it looking stock, I would use one with no hole though.

Greg seems to think that the combo of EGR and intake flap are quite restrictive though.

Yeah not worried about the error codes, I've got them zeroed out in the ECU.

Just looking at the Snow kits in more detail and they talk about putting the nozzles inside the intake... i.e. The water/methanol mixture goes into your engine. Greg, you just set yours up as an intercooler spray?

                    • Can't you just turn EGR values down with a tune. CustomCode did it with mine.

                      • My smaller hold EGR gasket is a Skoda part and it moans from time to time about low EGR flow but it can clear itself without VAGCOM most times, haha.

Yeah you can turn it down, but I've been logging and It doesn't seem to be right off. Also the anti shutter valve/intake manifold flap & EGR combo are restrictive apparently.

I'm gonna order a darkside development removal pipe (to remove both ASV and EGR).

                          • Wow the old thread still kicking huh!

Sorry, not on here as much as I would like, busy setting up my exit from employment and my jump into a proper shop!

You are right in that EGR is only turned down via a tune, it can't be halted 100%. If you blank it entirely you better get used to the engine light CEL, like I am. Viezu is still working on mine to see if they can get rid of the light on zero EGR, but no luck as yet, so for now turn it down with a tune if you have one, and run a spacer with a 10mm hole.

You can't remove the valve. Mine is hanging in the breeze, but still plugged in. If you unplug it, the car throws a more serious error and goes into a partial limp, and basically the power drops. Add to that you can't do a regen without a valve. I have a QTP exhaust cut out valve for runaway and regen, and I have to manually half close it every regen, and trust me it's a pain and my regens often fail and take a few attempts. This is nowhere near a good idea as yet. I'm out into Carformance come June, so the tinkering shall indeed kick back in, and solving all these issues will be high on the list.

For now run a Provent, use a spacer with hole, and if tuned, get the EGR written down. Further mods are very tenuous at present......

I'm certain that the CEL light can be stopped pretty easily, I know exactly where to find it in the map.

No longer have a DPF myself I decided that I will just remove the ASV and EGR. I've ordered a "race" pipe from Darkside.

Did you see this on the previous page? Quite curious. I'm considering running one myself, but not sure whether I should actually inject the water/meth in the intake air or just externally over the intercooler.

Why would you pay all the big $$$ for a Snow Performance Water/Meth kit to spray onto the front exterior of the intercooler... thats what a Intercooler Spray kit is for.
