EGR should we all be more concerned

On that note I can't seem to adjust my Provent side pressure regulator. I do remember taking it apart when i got it for a lookie see, but it doesn't want to turn either way. I'm going to get onto Sydney Filter services, where I bought it, and see what they have to say. The Provent manual, I have my original here, is vague in this area. Obviously getting this working is my best solution.

As for adding stuff to my inlet to clean out what's already there, well, too late...

I wonder when the plexiglass (lighter) side and rear windows are going in, followed by carbon fibre panels ? After that the Audi aluminium suspension components. I suppose he already runs without any water in the windscreen washer bottle, and only ever has 10 liters in the fuel tank . And of course the scales were involved in choosing the lightest possible wheels and tyres (tongue planted firmly in cheek - I actually like someone who thinks about things and is willing to go in their own direction)

I can't really talk about this particular kettle being black - I can remember wearing out many drill bits (and the drill itself was never the same afterwards) drilling umpteen holes in the cooling fins of the barrel and head of my first motorcycle. Of course, spending I don't know how many hours removing 100 - 150g of aluminium wouldn't have made much difference, but it kept me occupied and didn't harm anyone else, and I persuaded myself that the holes and the special matt black paint I sprayed on helped dissipate heat better than stock (and probably did).

Mate back in my bicycle shop days, when I was full on into triathlon, I spent a gazillion hours whittling the weight of my bike down to ludicrous levels. If you could drill it I did, and I am a guru with the dremel today because of those days. I still have an excel spreadsheet of all the individual part weights of my current bike today, so we all have our own version of the fetish.

Back on topic, the diesel is eating the meths/water just fine, ( so far! ) and is using a paltry 100mL over about 20kms with my setup. I can't see this little causing any damage, but time will indeed tell. When she's empty, I'll have a lookie see in the inlet tract for oil / sludge.

I race DH. My bike weighs about 17kg and is considered light. Ha!

I do dig the lightweight/simplicity ethos though, but really, I bought the Golf because it's comfortable, luxurious, practical and enjoyable to drive. I'm happy with the current balance of all of those attributes and wouldn't want to change it.

BTW my old man has a PRB S3 - Aus built Lotus 7 style car. Simplicity and minimalism at it's best.

Yes, Colin Chapman was always keen to "Add lightness", and if it broke then he knew he had taken things just a little bit too far.

OK, for the record, I've just had my Provent apart for a lookie see, and the removable filter inside is absolutely oil soaked. I've done 32k now, and I'd reckon if you have a Provent, on a GT at least, you'll be up for a new filter cartridge every 25k or so. I'm degreasing this one out, but I'll get a new one and try and keep an eye on how long it lasts. If they aren't super expensive I might start doing one every service, as sludge is a bigger issue overall to me, performance wise!!

I'll start collecting the drained oil in one container rather than dumping it each drain, so we can get an idea as to how much it collects over a certain amount of KM. Will give us some rough guidelines as to how they last.

I'd hate to think how you guys without one are going!

Also I'm a litre down in my water metho "injection" in a bid to clean the EGR out a bit, and will pop the inlet hoses once it's done to see if it did anything. Might need to use something a bit more specific, as metho doesn't really move oil all that well. Perhaps some of Preeny's nitro....

That will be valuable information, cogdoc. Especially if you also measure lube oil consumption, fuel consumption and quality of fuel (ie BP Ultimate Diesel or whatever).

Be very interesting to see if the volume of EGR gunk correlates with fuel consumed (my guess) or lube oil consumed.

More bad news for you 103kw'ers....re-read my 125kw TDI tech bulletin, which concentrates on the differences over the 103kw version, and they list "improved oil separation" as a design feature.

I read that as saying the 125 has the LEAST oil vapor stock!

unlikely... the 125kw engine will run more boost than the 103kw one, so will have more blowby, and require better oil separation to have the same emissions..

...and even the same 125kW engines will have different amount of blow by among them, the amount of blow by depends form to many things (piston to cylinder seal, type of oil used, type of fuel used ……) also one of them is how the engine was run in?
It also depends how well the manufacturer designed hardware that seperates engine oil from the blow by gases.

IMO it could make it worst.
LPG replaces diesel in the combustion, I'd be worried about the DPF (if fitted).

LPG is a secondary fuel, and it definately raises EG temps. I figure it would only make EGR worse, as with a greater explosive force thanks to LPG, you get more blowby ( the rings) and hence more oil vapor.

LPG into a highly tuned diesel would need to be done very carefully to keep EGT's low enough, and in the 125 they are already quite high stock!
