couple more pictures from a meet at the start of the week
its going in to the bodyshop to get the A-pillars back painted tomorrow night instead of in three weeks then I need to sort out my own adaptors and dial out the front camber when I get it back as well as refit the ghetto 70mm front splitter
After I fixed the sump(wait did I tell you about the sump?Kinda smashed that braking from 140+)then the radiator decided it didnt like not being handled without velvet gloves during the front end off paint so splitting its end cap where the clip from the front panel fits was its way off showing dissaproval. Painter has issues still with his boss so the rear halfs still not done. My splits are taking longer than I wanted and im fed up missing e-bay deal adaptors that would suit them to a tee. The exhausts rear hanger gave up the ghost after one too many scuffs and has decided to go seek more gainful employement elsewhere.
Then out of the blue a passenger in some random car today actually got out the car he was in at a set of red traffic lights and ran round my car and took a couple of pictures. Made me laugh and forget the silly wee niggles with it
15/6/11
working out the new adaptors for the dials
All good in theory but I wanted to be sure so tried a friends 8.5s on to measure up properly for adaptors
front 8.5x17 et 38(after adaptor)early 16v fenders,rolled but not pulled
ran over a motorway cone base in the roadworks on my commute to work last tuesday
Wasnt burst or leaking but the oil light came on at idle and the oil pressure went off at anything over 2500rpm so figured the sump was humped up tight on the oil pump strainer again. Babied it back and forth from falkirk to glasgow(70 mile round trip)to earn coin to fix it thinking it wasnt burst so whats the worst that could happen.....
bought new metal sump from my mate LeeMurray - 'manback' who is a service advisor for a VW dealership
removed the old sump circle is where the strainer had been embedded
to this result, was actually hanging together by a thread but as soon as I tried to remove it with the sump off it fell to bits
new pump and pick up was 150gbp which tbh was beyond me but another friend Euan Bennet came to the rescue although it meant a 140 mile round trip to pick up the parts
almost new mk5 .:R sump, pump and pick up and the day from hell later....Was leaving bennets house in my sisters car that I had as a loaner to go get the sump when I got a call that my mother had been in a bad three car smash and was in hospital, left(in a hurry)and naturally got stopped by police doing 74 on a 60 freeway while en route to the hospital.....to further find out I had an expired licence dating back 8!!! years to a previous driving ban where I incorrectly filled out paperwork after the fact and my licence had subsequently expired.....so they impounded my sisters car and were going to leave me at a cab rank 40 miles from home and 65miles from the hospital....luckily I knew a guy from the recovery company and they dropped me at a train station albeit still 30 miles from home. Never got home till almost midnight but my mom had by this time been x-rayed,found to have no broken bones and released so went to bed....
8am start this morning...new metal VR compared to 'new' mk5 .:R sump
reinserted the OG pump drive and bolted up the new .:R pump
4 allen head bolts in all, refitted with a dribble of loctite and nipped up
sump on
the start of more clearance.........new engine mounts to follow soon as possible, the og mounts are notorious for sag seemingly worst cases found in high mileage VR golfs and corrados
for now itll do
huge thanks to Lee,Bennet and Dave at SOS the latter let me fix the sump which turned into the trainsmash that bennet sorted out while my car was stranded on a ramp for two ****ing hellish days
kinda up to date now, cars going away for the final paint for definate on monnday night and he expects to have it till the end off the week so more pics then
unlucky about all the stuff going wrong, but that VW's for ya hey, love hate relationship. Glad to hear your mum's ok, never pleasant hearing that a loved ones in a prang.
that paint's lush! Top job by the looks. Keep the updates coming, never get bored of this car.

thanks Goes away tomorrow night for a full paint finally. Its been pencilled in a couple times but had to postpone due to work stuff and breakages so im just glad its finally getting done. Hoping to have the splits built up for the end off the week and the adaptors will hopefully have sorted themselves out by then as well.
Still waiting to get the engine mounts from the states but the new radiator should be going in while the front end is off again next week. Picked up a fuel leak friday as well I got warned about corrado's but ive owned close to three dozen mk1s and 2s and ive seriously never had as many issues with any off them. The sooner I get a 24v for it the better I think.
Slight complication, painter had a nightmare journey back from a show he was at at the weekend and asked for a days grace to sort himself out(he also has a corrado lol)and then I broke the new sump the morning it was supposed to go away
Its currently lying outside my flat with its nose in the air waiting on another mk5 sump which is on back order for some reason
the cast alloy sumps are a pain cracked the one in my 9n3 and by god it was expensive to replace!

ive got a source to get them at cost but they were still weighing in at 80 gbp's currently running a mad max spec sump of death thats standing up well....basically the second steel sump that smashed the oil pump hammered out to accomodate the .:R pump then 'strengthened by a stitched on 6mm steel plate and a durty grate bit of 1" angle iron stitched alog the front....
recent work...
was a very busy week......
moar work got did
****ety****shearedbolt caused a mare of a time
seems head gasket was probable cause for og radiator fail
stuffss been done otherwise including the local kids taking a sharp object along the passenger side off the freshly painted car,the fuel feed line springing leaks from either end thatve cost me a half tank of gas and any and every little thing igniting my nipples

then corrado decided to drop its engine on the ground............
drivers side bumper bolts came loose by some combination of errors and fell out basically so that side of the cross member was only being held up by an m6 bolt or whatever the **** it is with a 13mm head which also eventually came out depositing the sump literally on the ground.
Id just got the day off for tomorrow sanctioned and was heading from work to the nearest jetwash when the poo literally went down
Stephen(my brother)came to the rescue, left the pictures and brung down the trolley jack.Banged a widow maker under the sill.Lifted it up enough to get the trolley jack under the front on the cross member, ghettoed the cross member back on and should possibly be back on track for still taking mine tomorrow now
