Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • WOW! thanks Aussietig and Kamold for putting so much great work into this.

I've just downloaded the personalpoi.db3 and will have a go at loading them via SD card tonight.

small question. I am a bit shaky on how to do the proper searchable install via CD.

am I right that I need a V5 maps CD to begin with? then take an iso of it, replace the poi.db3 with aussietigs file then install that? but since my car is already v5 (I think, just bought novemeber 2012 scirocco R) I need to downgrade to 4.1 first AND I need to do something in the secret menu?

where I'm going... is there possibly a sydney member who has a current map disk who can help me out with this over the next few weeks? I'm willing to travel to you and would be happy to provide a meal/drink/whatever in exchange for your time. I'm not particularly lazy, just not experienced with this stuff and don't want to balls it up.

I'm also trying the VIM mod which seems a bit simpler so I'm giving that a go myself. fingers crossed!

      • Upgrade to 4120 firmware from this forum, it has VIM already, plus maximises music partition and has secret menu enabled.
Happy to help you out if you want a guide.

No need to downgrade to 4.1, if you install new firmware there will be no map installed, so you can just install the v5 map that has poi file replaced as you mentioned.

thanks for the reply kamold. I just logged on after coming upstairs from doing the VIM and uploading the personalpoi.db3.

I just installed the VIM hack CD and at first it was working then it came to a screen where it said it couldn't 'downgrade' as current software was (for example) v1234 and disc inserted was v1234. but it then said insert a disc with later software or restart. it had ejected the disk at this point. I left the disc sitting there and did a reset (pressing eject, star and guide) and it then swalled the disc but up and started over again but this time I got the confirmation screen, clicked ok and it worked.

is it possible I have 4120 firmware already? the car is pretty new (picked it up just 4 weeks ago so I guess maybe a few months old).

if that's the case what's my best option? and also, what's the 'secret menu' and how do I enable it?

sorry for the noob questions and thanks for your help.

                • I've got a small update people may or may not know about. I know tig posted about how if you just import the POI's via SD card you can't search for them. but you can still do a proximity search like "closest 7-11". I just went into nav, new dest, search, poi, chose category 'personal' then I put something like nearest dan murphy's and it works just fine. I guess maybe it doesn't work doing a complete search but if you know the thing you want to find it works nicely.

                  • Hi guys,
A couple of videos on how to upload the POI from SD card and how to Mark them so they stay on the map

                    - upload POIs from SD card
                    - mark the Speed Cameras so they appear when you travel

Hope it helps to some of us who have struggled with these features.

What I did was export the category in POIInspector, then clear it out, delete it, and add a new category with the icon I wanted, and re-imported the previously exported POIs. That then successfully used the new icons.

Hi, I've tried to use my own icons, with the 34x39 and while the list show the new icon, it doesn't reflect on the map, how do I get the icons to show on the map. I've deleted everything and exported via poinspector but it still doesn't seem to work. I must be missing something but cant seem to figure it out, please help

                      • custom POI's don't work and now lost default POI's also.

Hi guys, new to golf and the forum so will say thanks to aussietig for a great thread and for any of your help in advance.

Yesterday I successfully updated my RNS510 (verC) with f/w 421x and the v5 maps. All went well and had the default POI's for the drive to the office. After reading this thread I added aussietig's PersonalPOI.db3 with an SD card. Successfully achieved up to and including step 4 below, at step 5 the 'select map details' was greyed out.

To upload this file from SD card onto your RNS510:
                        1. Create a new folder also called PersonalPOI on your SD card and save the PersonalPOI.db3 file into this subfolder.
                        2. Insert your SD card into RNS510.
                        3. Press 'Setup' button, then select 'Navigation' on the screen.
                        4. Select 'My Points of Interest' and select 'Import' and wait for import confirmation.
                        5. Now exit and press 'Map' on the screen whilst still within 'Setup', then select 'Select Map Details' on the screen.
                        6. Scroll down to my 'PERSONAL' Folder and choose the custom POI of your choice to be permanently displayed map is on screen.

Any suggestions on why the 'Select Map Details' are unavailable? the import of the PersonalPOI's went off without a hitch.

                        • There is a limit to how many Poi unit can accept.

Still trying to work out that magic number.

After loading my file, you might need to reboot your unit to force it recognise the new poi. So need you to confirm how many did you load.

Or try redownloading my file and try again.

                            Could be several things:

You got the pixel size right, but they have to be saved as .PNG file format.

Have you selected the icon under setup/map?

When u finished creating it, did u vacuum the changes to lock in your changes within poinspect0r?

I t can only accept a maximum of ten categories to display on the screen. You can load as many as you like (within your .db3 file) IIRC, but when you select which categories you want displayed on the map...then 10 is the magic number.

                              +1 for resetting the unit.

Also...what is the size of your .db3 file Easter?
