  • Got the sump painted today..

And I also cut out a template to make a couple of sump baffles.

I'm going to attach them to the windage tray. They will have about 10mm clearance to the bottom of the sump and will help trap the oil around the pickup, to stop it sloshing around.

    More to come..

    • The boys on fire. Have you thought about attaching some baffles to the sump ?? Similar to schrick sump.

Definitely thought about it. But this is a bit easier. I was thinking about trap dooring it and all that. But I don't think i'll have much trouble with oil supply like this. If all else fails, stick another 1/2l in. haha.

I know Stan Pobjoy used to check the oil level with the engine actually running..

          • Yer have seem some crazy ass trapdoor designs but as you say an extra 1/2 a liter will sort it.

I did. I was actually going to copy that. I may well do that in the future, but start small.. I doubt my car will have a ridiculous amount of grip that necessitates a sump like that.

I've also got some rare earth magnets to go in the bottom too.. You know, for "magnatec" technology. haha.

                • Yeah, you'd need to pulling some silly Gs through very long corners before it became an issue.

There's some long benders at Phillip island and I haven't had any oil pressure issues as yet.

                  • I belief those morroso ones are a larger quantity sump too , hence the little return thingy.

                    • They increase the capacity for sure. The wing on it in the picture shows that. I'm going to run a large Setrab oil cooler and a diesel oil filter, so i'll have another 1-1.5 litres of capacity anyway.

                      More pics to come.

                      • Sump baffle plates and engine mount.. Modified and done.

I've had this diesel engine mount kicking around for donkeys. Dad's got some random Mk1 parts here and there for some reason from different things, sometimes he has something I want! haha.

Timmy B reckoned they were the go so I finally got around to hacking it up. Should look ok all painted up...

                          • I took all my gear to Robinsons Toolmaking yesterday for balancing. Hugh had a couple of suggestions for the crank as far as the counterweights go, so i said "go nuts". I'm interested to see what he does. They said I can get my stuff back by the end of the week, so knowing what machinists are like, i'll probably get it back early next week.

Got my baffle plates sorted this morning. Should be able to weld them up tonight..

                            • Well, I got the baffles welded up last night.. I had a crack at it with the TIG, but I haven't used a TIG in about 3 years, so I decided rather than make an atrocity out of it, I'd just MIG it.

To be honest i'm pretty disappointed with how it came up. I was using .9 wire (that's all I have available), so it was a bit tricky to get it to burn without running it so hot it drops a hole straight through the tray.

Lucky it's going in the sump.. haha.

It's a matter of technique. Rather than trying to lay down a bead it's better to lay down a series of overlapping spots. You wait for each spot to stop glowing red before pulling the trigger on the next spot.

It ends up looking like this. (I was using 0.6mm wire too which makes things easier)
