Yeah. I figured, i'm going to buy one anyways.. The dollar is freaking awesome at the moment and the 40th Anniv. case would go well with the retro car..

Cool, how are you handling advance? Headed down the Saab route?
I was looking at using the statically timed 16v dizzy with electronic ignition system with programmable advance.
Something like this Multi Function Ignition Controller - 8979 in line with your ignition.

Yes that's something that's on my mind. I was hoping to use some type of OEM module (not fussed if it isn't VW!) with a set advance curve to start, before i went playing around with programmable stuff.. But i may just buy the MSD controller.
This has got me worried: VWvortex Forums: Give it to me straight... How long do I have..
Looks like i will be buying a new set of bearings with the OEM type 6 piece thrust bearing. I'm not going to chance it.Last edited by Preen59; 11-04-2010, 11:13 AM.

Pete
& in hindsight, I really should have used one of these ignition controllers over my 6AL BTM (boost retard) & they are also only approx $20US more than the setup I got(ignition box only! Then add in the coil, coil bracket, leads, lead separators, RPM Pills etc.) & then would have total control over the entire ignition instead of just using the stock mechanical advance & pulling timing out for boost only.
If your serious, the best place to get is JEGS I reckon.
I ordered all my ignition stuff on a Monday night Aussie time & it arrived Thursday Aussie time!
Can't argue with that kind of service!
Awesome stuff as always Preeny!
Keep it up & I'm sure I'll see you out on the road in no time for a head to head "cruise" haha

If your using a higher spec clutch than the standard I would definately be using the 6 piece items, Always has been a case of you get what you pay for.Originally posted by Preen59 View Post

Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
Cheers,
Grant...

Yeah. Unfortunately the bearing set i got (.25 under) has the 2 piece thrust. I'll be running a Spec stage 4+ clutch most likely and i can't afford to have something like a thrust bearing let me down and destroy everything else! So now i'll be sourcing some genuine items.Originally posted by roccodingo View PostIf your using a higher spec clutch than the standard I would definately be using the 6 piece items, Always has been a case of you get what you pay for.
When it comes to components like bearings, i don't care about cost- aslong as they work and last!

i noted that my aaz engine has the 6pc stock bearings and when i checked them about 20,000km ago (on 210,000km) they look almost new.
My dad still has the original 2pc thust bearings in his 500,000k 1.5D. I guess the 180mm pressure plate doesnt hurt too much

Yeah from what i can work out it's just to do with clutch pressure. The smaller, early stuff can handle it, but the newer engines with more power and therefore heavier pressure plates must be too hard on them. I notice VR6's etc have the 6 piece ones aswell.. Once again they have a heavier pressure plate.

JEGS' shipping is as fast as they say it is..

And.. Andy actually got something finished when he said it would be! Haha.

Now all i need is the right bearings (I'll get some sent from TT next week). Then i just need a clutch so i can get the rotating assembly balanced and we're in business.
