also... dont VW motors detonate 2deg after top dead center? hence why no pre detonation?
dom
ummm..... i sure dont understand that one. detonation/pinging is only a problem if it happens before top dead centre and before the spark. if it happens ATDC, then it wouldnt be pinging or detonation (since the pistons travelling back down), it would just be like retarded timing.

All engines ignite the charge BTDC. If you ignited it after it would be a complete dog. You need the compression to heat the charge and increase the rate of burn for a maximum power stroke. This isn't really a debate on when an engine fires though. Look up basic internal combustion theory and you'll learn about that.
"Pre Detonation" would imply ignition before detonation.. Which doesn't really make sense. It's either "Pre ignition" or "Detonation", which is essentially the same thing with a different name, like saying "ignition advance" or "ignition lead".
FYI, your average VW watercooled engine should run sweet with about 28-30 degrees total ignition advance.
all aircooled VW motors ignite b/n 5 to 8 degress BTDC from memory...
Yeah the air cooleds hate timing. They can't disperse the heat apparently. Dad also informed me that the later air cooleds actually did fire at about 2 degrees ATDC, but they were doing all kinds of funny things with them at that stage..

there's a 356 mech next door to my work, he times them just like normal engines - 25-35 deg total advance, depending on compression/tune/cams etc.

What...? Wait...? January 2008...? Where the hell did this come from. I've got a lot of catching up to do.
Will have to wait until I get back though.
Cheers,
Trent
I should mention that ontop of the work i've been doing with the dragster, i've been chasing (and getting jerked around) some pistons for a while. It would have been OK if i wanted turbo pistons, or "off the shelf" 80.5 11:1 comp pistons. But, of course given the fact that i wanted them to MY spec it posed a few hurdles and many companies didn't what to know about it, which kind of annoyed me. Hasn't worried me too much though, as i've been pretty busy anyways.
