Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Decent job on the top end damage were the pistons okay?

      • That's rotten luck mate, little setback but I'm sure it'll come back stronger.

        • Pistons are a little scuffed but OK. The marks aren't deep and will easily polish out.

            • Head is due back from repairs this week.

I was a bit dubious about running those cat cams again and got a pair of new Schrick cams from Eurospec.

The e85 conversion is nearly complete. The new tank is in and I've run in new anodised fuel line.

Did a stack of work on the fuel system and have converted every fitting to AN now. Not a single worm band on the car anywhere now.

New tank ready to go in.

I found some cheap wheels on eBay. These will be for a set of wet tyres after I've painted them silver.

Seller was in Sydney but the wheels shipped directly from Malaysia.

              8 x 15 et0, same as my other wheels.

i think the wheels look quite mean in black, should leave them that colour...

                • Head is delayed another week.

In the mean time I spent yesterday cleaning the oils system and getting everything else ready.

Cleaning the oil system is a big job. Because of the aluminium swarf that was created I had to pull the sump off the motor, flush out all the lines, remove the oil cooler and flush that as well as cleaning a bunch of other stuff like the oil tank.

Because the cam locked up I was worried that the timing gear on the crank might have sheared it's pin. rather than risk it I installed a new one. This is the press fit unit from IE along with their upgraded crank bolt.

IE machine this from steel, the VW one is sintered metal.

IE sell an upgraded ARP crank bolt that offers greater clamping force to the gear. I already had the standard ARP bolt in there. The new one is a little longer so I had to machine and extra 2mm of clearance into the back of the oil pump drive adapter.

                  Reassembled.

Whilst in here I swapped out the thermostat cover. I've never been comfortable with the the 06A plastic neck and upgraded to this aluminium one from 034.

Here's just some of the oil lines that had to come out to be cleaned.

All looks good up under here.

                    • Next race is November 3. I'm aiming to retune the car for e85 before then.

                      • Car is all back together now and up and running on e85.

I've just fired it up and bought it up to temp. Now it has to cool down overnight so I can re torque the head when it's stone cold.

Off to the Dyno on Monday for a retune.

These guys do really nice head work. Their valve seat cutter is CNC and they cut a smooth transition into the port.

Degreeing in the cams was fun. The guys from Orger who fixed the head double checked my work.

                        • looking forward to the dyno results on e85 pete

                          • Dyno results turned out to be exactly the same as the 105 ULP.

Even with the Schrick Cams the curve was exactly the same.

To make the car run I just upped the injector timing by 30 %.

Once on the dyno the low range was a little lean and the high range was a little rich.

Advancing the timing didn't bring the power up any so we left it in the safe zone.

I guess the 105 and e85 have similar horsepower potential and airflow through the motor is the limiting factor.

I'm running at Sandown tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see how much extra fuel it uses and if it drives the same.

                              • Yep, e85 is about $1.33 /L.

The 105 is $4.25 /L and a 3 hour round trip to Derimut to collect it.

I have 2 United Servos that sell e85 within 10 minutes of home.

Car ran well yesterday, was getting consistently down to 1:28 when traffic allowed.

I've changed rear master cylinder, the rear bias seems a lot better now and the car is more stable under brakes. Still need to really dial it in.
