Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It took me the next 2 sessions to figure it out but the balance bar was fouling the accelerator pedal.

This caused the engine to rev out when I hit the brakes hard, this was somewhat confusing at the time and is what happened in the video when you see me shoot up the turn 4 exit road.

A good tip is to check the working perameters
Of everything that moves "like pedals" BEFORE taking and using
The car with other people around. That way you are doing everything you can
To minimise the risk of injuring someone.

Certainly everything was checked through it's normal range of motion prior to the event but there's always issues that only appear in service.

As to the suitability of the testing environment, all cars on a racetrack are under test and there are emergency services on hand should the need arise.

Perhaps my prose was phrased a little too dramatically. The decision to take the exit road was mine as the coast was clear and the car was having an unexpected response to my input.

I intentionally tested the brakes at that corner as I knew the exit was available and there was plenty of run off in all directions. Being a club level event there were no spectators at that corner and in any case they would have been behind a tyre wall and a dirt berm, the marshals were behind me at that point, 180° to the direction of travel. There were no other vehicles in any of my possible departure vectors.

I have since modified the OBP pedal box as it's subject to flex under load and has interference issues in some scenarios.

          • First video is up.

In car stuff to follow later this week, I'm still trying to configure the analysis package to render the log data.

                • It took a while to figure out the video editing again. New camera and a different data set meant a bit of work to do. I've got it templated now, hopefully the next ones will be easier to do.

I need to do a little more work on syncing the data to the video, it's a bit off at the moment.

Future videos should have laptimes too. I need one run on a track before I can set up sector markers in the data logger.

3rd gear synchro isn't working right, you'll hear it pretty clearly in this video. Not sure how I'm going to fix that yet. It's freshly rebuilt and running redline oil.

The car seems to have plenty of poke, it eats 4rd and 4th gears!!!!!

                        Good work fella

Got carried away trying to see how much faster I could enter the corner.

Agree 5th seems too tall to me too. The gearbox builder was vague about exactly which ratios he put in there.

                              It should be a 0.91 or a 0.89 but I'm wondering if it's not a 0.75.

I'll have to do the math to figure out or just pull the end off the box and count the teeth.

In any case it's all good input for when I build the 02a down the track.

                              • Thats it Pete, im going to say it. You sir, are hands down, a freaking genius. The amount of work that went into that car, and the amount of effort you put into the forums make you an A Grade LEGEND in my books.

That acceleration is crazy fast. I cant imagine being in it. You over took every single car, and when you spun out you over took them again so effortlessly. I'd like to see that beast in a real race.
