Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Nice work Pete , I have always just used all-thread for my drawbars. Double nut on top bingo.

      • Very, very busy trying to put this together for DOVW.

I've been doing 3-4 hours a night on the wiring alone.

Here's a bunch of pictures to tide you over 'till Sunday.

Chain reinforced, wire reinforced, regular old style and new style exhaust hangers.

Made a pipe to connect the headers to the rear system. Got it ceramic coated.

Put some heat sheild up here to try and keep some of the heat out of the cabin.

I don't like saggy exhausts. This bend always seems to drop as it's unsupported. I used a universal hanger to improve on the stock lack of support.

        • Started buying fluids.

          The box oil is in.

          Brakes and clutch are primed.

Still a few hoses to tighten and sensors to fit before the engine oil goes in.

I'm getting very weary of connectors.

          Weird colour this stuff.

          Visiting King Parrot.

          Heat shield for headers.

          Bosch motorsport lambda sensor.

          New pipe mated up.

          resonator and mid hanger.

Added heat shield tube over handbrake cable just in case.

                        • Very close now, it's mainly together.

Still a few wires to run in and terminate.

There's still programming and debugging to do on the ECU, data logger and dash yet, that'll take me a little while to nut out and document.

I need to have the dash talking to the ECU before I start it so I can see oil pressure and temperatures.

I also need to have the brake pressure sensors reporting to the dash so I can set the initial bias.

I've filled the brake system with AP PRF 660 fluid and had two small leaks to sort out.

(I took the cheaper option and used regular Castrol super DOT4 fluid in the clutch system.)

One leak was a brake light switch which was easily sorted and I've just spotted a weeping union in one of the rear lines, that'll just need nipping up.

I don't think I'll get the front spoiler done for DOVW at this rate, I'm just running out of time.

Hanging the doors and guards won't take too long, they've been on and off the car a lot of times now.

There's a few little touch ups to do to the paint here and there.

                          • This is the layout of the control panel.

I've avoided indicator lights because I intend to operate this by touch.

The only buttons I'm likely to need mid-flight are the wipers and kill switch so I put those where I can find them easily.

Most other controls are set before a race.

There's indicator LEDs on the Dash2 for indicators, oil pressure, rain lights, and screen heat, so I'll know they're on.

Camera switch provides power for my Go-Pro cameras, they go flat if I forget to turn them off and don't re-charge them. (There's no cigarette lighter socket in this car!)

Data logger power is independent of ignition because I want to be able to record during start and cool down.

Logging is indicated on the LCD.

Wiper is indicated by a wiper arm swinging across the windscreen..........

The start engine button lights up red when the ignition is on, it's a bit gimmicky. I could have used a momentary toggle switch and a missile switch cover I suppose. It's worth having this one different to the other switches though.

Wiper and indicator switches are centre off types.

                            Washer switch is momentary type.

The black buttons control the dashboard display and the red button starts the data logger.
