Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Spent most of yesterday running around trying to find fasteners and brake fittings.
Stripped down 3 separate steering columns to find good bearings which I cleaned up and re greased.
I sandblasted the rack and column before painting them black.
The column got a couple of extra braces welded to it as stock ones tend to fail.
The steering shaft boot is original from the car, oddly the best one second hand I've ever come across.
Sorted out the lines to the reservoirs. Probably overkill. I'll make a stay to make sure the clutch line doesn't get near the column or perhaps a right angle elbow.
I cut the steering lock off the column. Some racing classes demand that the steering lock is removed.
For the moment the column is in the stock location, once the seat is in I might lower it a few inches

Great updates as usual.
Peter with the steering column brackets people tend to also run a brace across from one side to the other to remove a bit more flex and increase the life of the brackets.

I was wondering if that's what you meant.
The early cars like mine don't really suffer from that problem as the rack bolts up solid at both ends. The supporting brackets are different and I've seam welded them in any case.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Got a tank in over the weekend, it's a diesel one I've cleaned up.
Need to source a suitable roll over valve for the breather.
Suitable fuel hose for the tank to filler connection is 38mm if anyone needs to know. I got this piece from Purple Pig. (Yes that's a real business! Purple Pig - Industrial hoses, fittings and rubber products.)

Small things amuse small minds but do also require a stupid amount of time to research and procure.
These are bits for the brake system.
4 way M10 brake unions
Stop light switch (I'm going to put one in both front and rear circuits)
BMW Brake Pressure sender (So I can log brake pressures, again, front and rear.
and all the little bits that make up the connector for the pressure sensors.
For those of you interested in logging, the BMW sensors are a lot cheaper than the motorsport equivalents, are M10 and will read to 250Bar. Their curve is linear and the data sheet is readily available to program your logger.
Bosch part number is 0 265 005 303
BMW part number is 34 51 1 165 467
Part numbers for the connectors can be found in the data sheet. http://apps.bosch.com.au/motorsport/...ghpressure.pdfLast edited by Peter Jones; 19-04-2012, 11:35 AM.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Very techo Pete, logging brake pressure in each circuit. Will be some good info coming out of this me thinks.
Any reason why you went with a hyd brake light switch and not a mechanical version ??
All coming together nicely anyway.Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
Cheers,
Grant...

Individual brake pressure.. That's pretty tricky. When I was crewing on a Fujitsu car a few years ago, even that only had front/rear.

Just front/rear Chris, I got a couple of spare connectors.
I went with the hydraulic switches because I couldn't figure out an elegant way to mount a mechanical one on the pedal box. All the likely locations were in places I might step on.
