It was 7cm at the tie rod end. I worked out bump steer to be 10° per metre.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

A small detail, I cut a vinyl sticker for the fuel filler.
Back windows are in. CAMS says that the roll cage manufacturer's name must be visible through the back window hence the stickers.
I'm leaving the cling film on the perspex for the moment just to save it from scratches and dust.
Here's the windscreen just sitting in place. I've booked a pro in to fit it on Saturday morning.
Normally I'd fit it myself but I've got a lot invested in this screen. It's an electrically heated unit from Ricky Evans motorsport.
Heated Windscreens
It will be a long time before I get the opportunity to ship another one of these.
The heating elements are very fine. Here I'm holding a piece of paper up against the inside of the screen so I could photograph them.
The screen is dived into separate sections for driver and passenger sides.
The connections just come out from between the glass and the rubber on either side of the screen.
I've been trying to find a swirl pot that would mount hanging from the floor of the car. Most are designed the other way up to mount in the boot of a sedan.
This is a brand new design from Integrated Engineering which incorporates the mounting of the fuel pump internally.
Integrated Engineering Billet Surge Tank- Submerged 044 Pump
Here's the pump to go in it. No surprises, it's an 044.
I've been using the SAE handbook to look up suspension geometry and brake hydraulic info. Great reference for anyone attempting to build a car from first principles.
Mounted up the dashboard.
I folded up some aluminum sheet to box in the remains of the upper column bearing.
It's secured on one side with 3 M4 screws and on the other by the M8 clamping bolt.
The sheet is quite rigid, I don't think I'll need a diagonal brace on the vertical section. In any case I need to re-check the viewing angle once the seat is back in.
Once I've done that I can easily add in a small brace.
Here's a couple of shots with a dummy wheel on it from roughly the driver's perspective.
It's about time to start on another gearbox.
Here I'm recovering a 3.94 ring gear to go onto that Peloquin I've had sitting about for the last 3 years.

The vertical piece that holds the dash up is not symmetrical.
It annoys me in the photos but I'll get over it. The dash is central to the steering column.
I would like to point out for the record that the lack of symmetry is caused by the position of the plugs on the rear of the unit and the ridiculous positioning of the mounting holes!
The manufacturer decided to randomly place the three screw holes across the back in no discernible pattern. I don't know why.
I suppose I could have made the bracket look wider but this build isn't about looks.Last edited by Peter Jones; 12-06-2012, 10:59 PM.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Looking good Peter, hope to see the car one day at a VW show, can't wait!
May I ask you how you managed to ship your windscreen over from the uk? I am currently trying to get 2 new side windows for my van shipped and nobody wants to touch glass...

I was very lucky and managed to get it shipped in a container of personal effects belonging to a friend that was emigrating to Australia.
It was very carefully packed by the manufacturer and the removalists. The friend was also working for a windscreen company at the time which helped.
You wouldn't believe the favours I've had to call in to get a lot of this stuff into the country.
Some parts came shipped inside a Chrysler mini van that was being brought into Aus!79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Dropped off a gearbox to be rebuilt this weekend.
It's the 2Y I was surprised to find in a Cordoba at Centre Road.
It's getting the Peloquin and 3.94 R&P.
This'll do for starters until I can afford to do something with the 02A.
I can use this box to establish final ratios required.
Should make for a reasonably strong 020.
Got the windscreen in now too and have sorted a few more of the decals.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Looking good Peter.
We had our 1st event here in the UK on the weekend, the response has been nothing short of staggering:
Only main problems we had were not being able to get the correct camber setting due to not having the hubcentric spacers we required for the weekend.
Quite amazing stand with vw heritage as we were displayed as a replica of the most famous golf next to a replica of the 1st ever racing golf:
