Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

              • Hi all and a happy new year.

Pete looks like you got busy after I left yesterday. Nice to see a bit of colour on.
To all the folks following this build thread I've been lucky enough see it in the flesh from the start and the quality of the work Pete is doing here is just top class. So much has been done to get to the point of having a perfect shell which is the key to a great car. Next is the real fun part where you start bolting things in for good. Enjoy

                • Cheers Geoff,

I got a lot of undercoating done today, the floor and some of the loose panels. Didn't get photos of the completed panels, we'll get some tomorrow morning.

Bagged up the front end to keep the over spray off it.

I got slowed down by a dent in the sill I'd forgotten to fix. I couldn't get a dolly to it so I had to use a slide hammer to pull it out. That worked OK but I'd made the metal too thin with the grinder to weld the holes back up. Nothing to do but cut it all out and make a new piece to go in there.

It's hot here at the moment. You have to work fast with the filler but the paint drys almost instantly.

Finished repair, not concourse but this is a race car after all. Normally this panel is well out of sight anyway.

                  • I pulled more of the seat belt anchors out and used the re-acquired real estate to put in another speed hole.[]

                    These brackets are surprisingly heavy.

Having the rotisserie does allow for some interesting means of access to things. Being able to walk in and out of the car via the windscreen makes life a lot easier.

Finished up the day by blocking back the last of the loose panels for undercoat first thing tomorrow.

                      • Good luck with the build Peter

My name is mike flynn "fthaimike", Peter recently contacted me asking about the Kamei car and i directed him to contact Kamei as i know Uwe who used to run the race team is interested in in people asking about the famous car and possibly using the original looks of their car.

I started writing and collecting Kamei history a few years ago now in preperation for my own kamei inspired track build as there wasn't much information on the original car but the history started to build up so much momentum i put most of my spare time in collecting it for myself and the fans, during it's collection i have been lucky enough to meet or get people back in contact with each other from back when the car used to race, I even found the original car during the journey which was amazing and with the information collected was in a position to prove the cars authenticity so a UK member imported the original for restoration which will hopefully happen soon as it changed hands recently.

This is me with Uwe Meier-Andrae of Kamei and his lovely wife Barbie:

You can read the history here (it gets better as it goes along and it is full of very rare info and pictures from my friends i met along the way and still grows even now):

This is my own Inspired track/show car i have been working on for a few years now, i wanted to get a more smoothed look:

The decals and paint took a long time to get right so hopefully it will help Peter to get an idea from the pics and my research on getting his car to look right.

                        • Cheers Mike, I'll be rapt if I can make mine look 1/2 as good as yours.

Again thanks for all your help.

                          • No problem at all Peter, i am always happy to know of anyone that the history i have put together has inspired fans and any inspired builds like your own and each one seems to be unique in their own way with each owner putting their own touch to their cars.

I am always happy to help Kamei fans and always also on the lookout for any additional articles/info/pictures that are not already collected by me and others.

                              • Quick update, I've been flat out spraying and sanding for the last couple of days.

Engine bay, underside and interior are all red now.

I've laid down a white base coat to make the top coat colours brighter.

Back in the 70's they used lead in the paint and the colours were a bit stronger, a white base coat will help make the colours pop.

Car is ready to start with the stripey top coat tomorrow.

It's going to take a couple of hours, the geometry is doing my head in!

Cheating a bit here and using a cheapo laser line from Bunnings to visualise the paint scheme and help out with the masking.
