Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sweet thread. Should have read this before picking up some Turtle Wax on the weekend.

Try Zaino too. Wash, clay dry as usual - then Z-AIO (light cleaner) polish - then hit it with some sealants - Z5 is my favourite. This can be layered up to 6 times. Then Z6 UV and gloss then Z8 in a final spray sealant. You can use Z-Clear Seal for the wheels which lasts so long it's funny. I use Nanolex on the glass although have recently been trying G|Techniq

Which I find equally as good and cheaper.....

Is sealant to be applied before or after wax? Also, how necessary is it when you are using wax.

Also, should the cloths used for waxing, prewax etc be washed after use?

Sealant should be before a wax as a sealant tends to be more durable than a natural wax.

Some people tend to use a spray sealant over a wax to get a bit more longevity out of a wax, but how much more it will last is hard to say to be honest with you.

It really depends how often you would like to be doing your car. A natural wax will be more regular however give you a better in depth/warm glow and look into the paint. However a synthetic will give you a more sharp, wet glossy look and tend to last much longer so you do not have to re-apply as often.

So finally after buying off the shelf .. I ordered from CarCare Products. The guys were great and answered my countless and possibly dumb questions... so many choices and little confused with which way to go. With Pierre's advice I ordered last Wednesday and it arrived to me in Queensland on Friday morning as planned.

1 x Duragloss Paint Protection Pack (Fast Clean & Shine)
1 x Duragloss Car Wash Concentrate
1 x Mint Grey Clay Bar Kit

Today was taking care of the baby..... first piece of amazement- a car wash that actually cleans and doesn't streak. I thought stuff I bought off the shelf was good but how wrong was I.

Next an adventure into claying... never done it before... I learnt the basics from the website and how to video. Away I went and totally blown away with what stuff was on there considering its not even 12 months old... but the shine and change in the paintwork just from that was great.

Next it was the Duragloss Bonding and Sealant Polish... so simple to do.. and the results.. just fantastic... I swear the paint looks better than when we picked it up new. Had to take a shot... ok a few.....

Now I get why its all about buying the right stuff and you get some great results. Next I will look at the other bits and pieces to build up the car detailing pack further.

^^^ and so it begins. You will become addicted to keeping your car clean. OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Detailing

Car looks good BTW, amazing how much better a result you get with good quality products. As for claying, amazing how much rubbish it pulls off the paint.

I did a 3hr long process last night of wash/clay/polish/wax. Looks excellent now!
Thanks to my Mothers Portable Wax Attack (helped me cut the wax & polish time down)

My golden rule of cleaning/detailing a car: No matter what, you are never finished, not ever.

The car wasn't very dirty as even the clay bar didn't take much off. I clayed the car after washing while it's still wet (spray some lubricant of course), so the process was quicker and the polish+wax on using the portable wax attack was sensational.
But the car looks ever shiny now, almost comparable to when I first bought it. A happy dad on fathers day

Btw a funny thing happened today, I parked my car in the basement carpark at Eden Gardens. As I was returning to the car, there was a family getting out of the car and the driver just mentioned to me that he didn't hit my car when they opened the door..I was like Oh!..Ok....
Then he was staring at my car as I left. Hmm... what shiny cars do to people is weird!

I take that longer than that to wax my Polo and it is half the size of your car. Must have been a pretty quick detail

Is the Mothers Wax Attack any good?

Do most of you guys hand polish and wax or use a machine?

Was Hand as good as machine? I don't mind doing it by hand as your only going to do it like 3-4 times a year. I dont drive my car that much.
