Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ant the answer is; no this one doesn't work with a MY14 O3 either. I just tried it.

I have mine booked in soon for a replacement gear knob due to chrome peeling and have been told that they can update the maps for me, we;ll see if they are right this time....

I ended up getting mine updated at Perth city Skoda. They charge $99 if your car is also being serviced or $199 if you bring it in just for that. Kinda expensive but I'm keeping the car long term so not too fussed...

        • Serious? They charged to update the maps? Or the firmware? My dealered had the SD card with the current version and offered but I had already done it. Certainly they weren't going to charge.

          • This is correct. I have been advised the same. The charge is to unlock the MY15 or previous MY vehicle nav unit with an unlock code to accept the updates as they are released.

            • I'm of the opinion if you are getting your car serviced there and especially while under warranty, this should be just covered, Fair enough to charge something if someone wants just this done but really its their own problem that means people have to get the dealer involved and its not like it does take lots of effort to leave a car sit for 45min unattended. I've seen ppl mention an update for the headunit for more recent cars but nothing was done to mine at its first service in May.

To be honest I wasn't clear on Skoda's policy regarding future sat nav updates when I bought the car thinking you just update it through the portal. When that didn't work I wasn't sure if I had to pay an upkeep or a subscription of some sort to receive them. My own fault for not enquiring when I purchased the vehicle, but this is the first car I have bought with built in Sat Nav. Still you could buy a tomton or garmin for close to this price or just use your phone if you don't mind sucktion cups on the windscreen. I do like and prefer the Columbus system so I'd rather upkeep it even if the price is a bit rich. Not sure what the go is when the next update comes out though? Dealer / service was pretty vague when I asked, seemed to think I could use the portal... bit confusing

                • I am very surprised you were charged for this, on purchase i had confirmed that the updates were to be done through the portal and once I had received my vehicle the portal had subscription expired. From what I have gathered is that the subscription on MIB I units expired on the release of the MIB II units and that the dealers had to perform the update in order to re-instate the ability to use the portal (not sure if there was any other updates / firmware changes applied). I had mine updated in June (car went in specifically to have this done) at no charge, and now a new update has been released it shows as being available against my car's VIN.

                    • Ive just had a very similar experience at Perth City Skoda. At last service they were unable to update either maps or software, I continued chasing skoda AU, who advised me last week that the issue was resolved and to contact the dealer for update. I forwarded all the info to perth city skoda who then rang and advised they have the disks or both software and map update, but it would cost me $99 to get it done. I queried this as Im pretty sure I was told free updates during warranty period when I bought it. They went away to check and Ive heard nothing since.

                      • The issue is that they have never ever had a clear policy about map updates. Pretty much every other make does. Ie get free updates if you service here. They seem to have recently changed roadside service to now be extended when dealer servicing whereas it was 3 yrs with the old standard warranty and 5 yrs if you got the extended. Guess the dealers pushed for that.

                        • Chased Perth City Skoda for an update today.....they are sticking to their guns that I will have to pay for the update, only now the price has gone up to $214!! ($99 for the unlock software, then $115 for the map update). Went back to skoda AU to query this and their response was quite frankly, crap.

                          Thank you for your email.
I have discussed this with Perth City ŠKODA.
I can confirm that there will be a one off unlock fee to update the MAPs in your vehicle. The dealership will contact you to discuss the cost involved and explain this further. Should you have any formal confirmation that your MAPs are to be covered please provide this to Perth City ŠKODA when presenting your vehicle for the update.

Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Experience Team on 1800 607 540.

Charging for a map update on a 2 year old, top of the range fully specc'd vehicle is a blatant piss take. The lease is up on this car in 7 months and having waited for over two years for them to fix the map problem, I'm not paying to use it for 7 months.
I was looking at ordering a Vrs 245 to replace my current car, but this has really put me off another Skoda - which is a shame, because this is my second Vrs and the cars have been great...just a shame the customer service is rubbish.

                          • I'm not sure what the fuss is all about to have the latest maps. Definitely wouldn't pay any money for the upgrade.
I had the maps on my RS updated @ 15K first service last month.
It is still rubbish to use at the moment around Melbourne CBD with all of the roadworks and closures around the CBD.
The Nav still tried to direct me to a non-existent BP service station in the middle of the CBD. I'm pretty sure the head office on La Trobe St doesn't have pumps out the front.....

Sticking with google maps and Telstra 4G for now. Much more reliable.

Why are only Shell service stations selectable as 'preferred' service stations on the Nav options?

How much did Shell pay VW group for this and how old is this deal?
It doesn't make sense since Castrol (BP?) seems to be the preferred lubricant by most VW service centres I've dealt with..

This is garbage ... I have a MY15 (Jan delivery) Octavia Elegance with tech pack with 3 yrs free maps. Took me 18 mths to get Skoda HO to do something to make them available.
Finally took the car to the dealer who unlocked the software (via the Techos at Skoda HO) & new maps loaded. Nil charge. Have been able to do 2 further updates via the Portal.

Waiting to see what happens in Jan 18 when the 3 yrs are up. Have already requested an 18 mths extension because of the earlier unavailability.

I think it's based on Europe ... nothing avail for Oz outlets only except She'll. Food outlets only Pizza Hut & Maccas for restaurants IIRC.

its the same for radio logos via the Portal..... Europe only - have to do them manually in Oz.
