Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Edit: it looks darker in pics than irl though!
      I have 20%

It's fine 99% of the time (reversing into my dark garage at night in rain I need to put passenger window down). Never had a policeman issue either

      • OK, so the last of my LED's have turned up (and a H8 cornering light) - I thought it was LED too, but I got sent a hid filled "normal" globe. Installed and it looks white enough (almost a match for xenons).

I have now replaced the rear reversing lights as well!

Reversing lights is a good upgrade. Nice white light, and quite a bit brighter than stock.

I have done the LED indicators (18 LEDs, in a multi directional fitting). They are instant on/off unlike normal globes, but I dont think these ones are quite as bright as the OEM "normal" globes. But they are fairly close. i'd look for some 21 LED replacements if I was to buy new ones now (to try and get as good or better than OEM brightness). I'll leave them in and see how they go (will have the missus follow me to make sure everything is OK/easy to see).

Didnt take photos of these unfortunately.

Also did the rear fog lights (unused in oz) - interestingly, only the right rear comes on when used as a fog. I will get both fogs coded to come on as fog lights, and as extra brake lights - the factory LED brake lights are only one thin strip - having the fogs as additional brake lights will "balance" the appearance of light at the rear. Plus extra brake lights cant hurt!

So overall, the reversing lights are worthy, LED indicators probably not, and the fog lights look good and will be better as LED's for my intended extra brake light functionality.

        • I read somewhere that rear reversing lights are to indicate to other drivers that you are reversing not to illuminate where you are reversing.
Judging by the usual poor output on most cars this could well be true.
The results look really good on yours and something I will seriously consider for mine.
The single rear fog light is standard for all Euros an I'm fairly sure they can be coded for both to come on. Don't think you will be able to get them to act as additional brake lights though.

          • Where did you buy the lights from?

Any what model globes are they?

              • Yes, got them from ledperf in the UK. I'll edit and post the links.

Gerrycan, you can indeed get other lights coded as brake lights! You could have the tail lights come on as brakes as well if you want. MQB platform is very flexible!

So in summary, don't bother with led indicators, they (IMO) aren't worth it. The reversing lights are though, nice and bright. I like the number plate lights (they are bright too) but I think if you were on a budget, the reverse lights are better bang for buck.

Interior roof lights and boot lights also worth doing.

Less unsprung weight, more castor, more negative camber with some versions, anti-lift geometry.

                    There's a thread somewhere

                    • Bought a MY14 Candy White Octavia Ambition Plus that has 4000 kms on it for $21,500. Is like brand new and drives like a dream. Happy with purchase, hope the missus likes her new car! Has to be better than the inefficient 2007 Mazda 3 she has!

                        • Thanks for your summary Gtr-most useful. Will have to make a list of light mods one of these days for my car when it finally arrives.

                            • Yes. Fortunately I'm not an idiot and realise that it has no impact on my child's safety though. I'll wear the fine if I get one. I'd sooner have safe seats than worry about having a retarded Australian standards sticker on them

Edit: it's similar to motorcycle helmet laws (which qld thankfully have now made so any ece approved helmet is OK, no Australian standards sticker required). The seats are $250-300 per seat and substantially safer than 90% of the seats on the Australian market. Isofix also eliminates incorrect fitting of the seats, which is a big issue for safety.

EDIT2: Just had a re-read and realised it sounds harsh. The point i'm trying to make is there are laws out there that can be completely stupid (like the aforementioned helmet and child seat laws) - they are there to protect the stupidest people from buying something completely inappropriate from overseas, which is not the case with the seats I purchased. I researched them thoroughly and looked at crash tests etc and picked one based on the crash rating/reviews. I understand they are not "legal" however, i (and no one else I know) has ever been pulled over and had their seats checked. Maybe if you were a complete ****head to the cops and failed the attitude test, then they might do somethings, but not if you're a normal person, not doing anything wrong. I'm sure they would also pick the tint I put on the car if they were being anal.
