I saw a thread on Briskoda and there doesn't seem to be a consensus, although the manual seems to suggest that 98 could be beneficial. I was quite surprised to see the min. RON was 95 on the label, not 98 like a previous TSI I'd driven.
98ron in the old version TSI. I worked out that at 20,000km/pa it's only a $300/pa extra and the engie gets more torque & better fuel economy

What does the label look like?

        • Guys need to pick your brain, the EPC and engine light on my RS has comes out in the morning.

So I was driving towards the city on the freeway following the traffic when all of a sudden the EPC light came on (solid) follow by flashing CEL. I was in 3rd gear, whenever I pressed the accelerator, the car shuddered and unable to pick up speed. Stayed like this for a minute or so, luckily traffic was slow. I changed to left lane anticipating full break down, as the car swap to 2nd gear, acceleration was back to normal, no shuddering at all gears, by this time the CEL has switch off as well, EPC remain solid. Reached the car park without any drama, restart the car and EPC has switch off. Any ideas??

I did notice that since I bought the car the engine seems to vibrate a little bit more than I anticipated during idle. Whenever I press and let go the throttle quickly the engine feels like it's going to stall. I mentioned this during the first service, they note it down but didn't investigate further, they just flash an update. Could this be related?

I always fill the car with 98RON.

The price variation between 95 and 98 octane fuel is consistently 6 cents here in SA, so your difference pa should be closer to $100 than $300 (17 cents difference between 91 and 98 Octane would be circa $300)

            • Hmm that is odd, what does the Golf GTi say? It's usually been 98 but says use 95 if you have to....and even 91 if desperate.

Thanks, you're right in both cases. I knew there wasn't much in it when I worked it out last time - like a coffee or two per week. I thought it best to overstate than understate.

99reza: If you get a CEL again pull over as soon as possible & switch off for a moment & restart & it often clears the lights. If a CEL is triggered it will have logged a code so mention it to the dealer even if it doesn't persist.

Often the dealer will simply clear the codes & not attempt to troubleshoot so it might be worth while to get a member with VCDS to scan & save the codes before talking to the dealer. That way, if there's a persistant problem further down the track you have more data for them to do proper diagnosis with.

Most likely a sensor (maybe the O2) is out of range - possibly because it's a new engine?

Thanks Brad. I'm hoping it's as simple as faulty sensor or bad coil pack.

Hmm anybody in Brisbane willing to rent me their cable?

PM vdubmotorworx as I'm sure he's got a cable and would be willing for a fee (noting he's just been made redundant) to read your error codes.

                    • Poor bastard. Was he part of the whole BB debacle? Hope he picks up a job soon. Surely workload will go up at other vw/skoda dealers to cope with the influx of customers.

                          The manual does state:
"Prescribed fuel – unleaded petrol min. 95 RON
Use unleaded fuel with the octane rating 95 RON or higher. If unleaded gasoline is not available with the octane number 95 RON, in an emergency petrol with the octane rating of 91, 92 and 93 RON can be used to fill the tank, but this leads to a slight loss of performance and a slightly increased fuel consumption"
                          ...
"On vehicles using prescribed unleaded petrol of min. 95 RON, the use of petrol with a higher octane number than 95 RON can increase the power and reduce fuel consumption."

Not sure what GTI stickers say. I guess I'd be filling up with 98 from now on. I don't have a problem with the price, 98 is usually around 5c more than 95 RON, which is maybe $2.50 extra per fill

Next question for Brisbane-skodians - where will/do you get your car serviced given that BB +/- associated service centre seems to be closed for now? Are there any good independents?

                            • Interesting that the recommended tyre pressures are now somewhere sensible. In the early days they were as low as 29psi in some sizes
