Averaging around 9-10L/100km, which is mostly suburban short drives dropping kids to school/kinder etc. Longer drives sees this reduced by 1-2L. When we did a weekend away to Torquay in Victoria (90 min drive mainly sitting at 100km's) was averaging low 6's. Car has done around 9K so far.

    • What engine is in yours? Rs or 1.8 I'm guessing with that sort of economy?

Shows mid 5s on highway at a steady pace, but I'm not driving smoothly at the moment, varying revs/load constantly while running in, so expect the economy is worse than what would be normal.
Yeah it will probably drop to mid 6's average long term. Pretty sure mine showed about 7.2 for the first 3-4k.

Yep, RS. It's the short < 10 min runs that do it - average speed is only around 25km on the trip computer. Any weekend drives see's it dropping down a fare bit, even when driving enthusiastically. Fuel economy is significantly better than my previous car (2005 2.5i NA Subaru Liberty manual sedan), so I'm happy enough with what I'm getting for the power it puts out. No complaints.

              • Anyone else with canton, how long did it take to loosen up? The one I heard in the demo car (a hatch) sounded way better than the one in my car. The sub especially. Demo car, everything turned down (sub to minimum) and it still pumped. My car everything on flat and the sub isn't really noticeable. I mean a good system shouldn't be, but in this case it's like it doesn't have a sub, or at least a weak one. Reports on briskoda say it improves a lot with age, so time will tell!

                • All speakers take time to run in. For example my home speakers took 400 hours to properly run in.

I recommend doing a bit more searching on Briskoda, as I recall reading that owners with the Canton system also recommend adjusting the settings to bring out more bass from the sub.

                  • Also check out surround processing settings. I turned it all off. Of course source quality might be an issue. FLAC has sounded good from day 1.

                    • I ripped a while bunch of CDs in 320k (highest bolero will go) so quality shouldn't be too bad. Have had a read of briskoda thread also. I think all processing settings are off (canton surround?) And levels are flat. Sub is set to 0 (middle). I can crank bass and sub up and it increases, but I remember the test car everything was on minimum and it pumped...... Might have a better play this arvo.

Edit, I'll try a few of my good CDs too and see if it makes a difference

                      • Sounds like my RS fuel economy is on par with most of you, not that you really drive an RS for economy in the first place Also sounds like most of you with the new 1.4 TSI get similar figures to what I got with the old TSI (twincharger). My record for a trip with that engine was 4.9L/100km over 125 kms. I was pretty impressed!

When I first got my car I actually was a bit disappointed with the Canton system. I didn't do side-by-side comparisons to my previous car which had an 8-speaker stock system, but I expected more. I was actually quite happy with the old cars sound, if there is enough bass to make the rear-vision mirror vibrate, it must be alright I'm only a skin-deep audiophile though. Anyway, a few weeks in and I feel like the Canton sounds better, but I'm not sure if its due to a) tweaking settings or b) ears getting use to it or c) speakers running in. One night I was tweaking the sound in the garage and my wife ran down wondering what all the banging was...

As others have noted, I think file quality makes a big difference. Not just the kbps but I've noticed some recordings just sound lovely and crisp compared to some which sound a bit flat and dull.

                        • I played around a bit with the settings.

Under Canton settings, changing sound focus to "front" from "off" has made a huge difference. Sub still feels a bit weak compared to demo car, but i'm lead to believe it will "run in" and improve a lot.

I tried some known good CD's in it too, and it wasnt much better than the high quality mp3 rips I did, so i'm sure source is OK. I have read its quite picky with source (high quality sounds lots better). Hoping that it loosens up in the next month or two and gains a bit of "punch". Dont get me wrong, its a decent stock system, but the demo I listened to had lots more, and I mean LOTs more bass...actually sounded like an aftermarket 8" setup with proper amp. Time will tell though (and i'm a harsh audio critic - I have a decent home setup, and very good headphones (Beyer DT880's).

                          • I noticed my Canton system was noticeably better after ~4000km. playing with the sub and sound focus definitely improves it as well.

                            • Speakers do need break in period, especially larger driver such as subwoofer, their suspension need to loosen up before peak excursion can be achieved. That's when they can start move plenty more air which equal more bass.

If you can't wait, play back white noise continuously at high volume for 24 hours or so and you should be set , I imagine it will be a boring experience. That's how I break-in my Avantgarde Acoustic speaker

                              • The changes I made last night will be good enough until it loosens up by itself. I'm not going to bother with white noise for hours, or anything like that lol
