Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • i'm getting an intermittent fuel pressure error and decided to remove my hpfp to check the cam follower and may be rebuild my pump. i have read horror stories about some guys shearing off bolts with continual removal and replacement of the pump so the stud kit looks like the way to go....

the kit below is available from europarts in the states...

but as i don’t have time to wait for the shipping i bought these items from a bike shop in oz, hopefully they will do the trick just as good...

and a quick shot of my braided rear brake lines to go on when i install the front rs callipers and discs...

    • so a few updates, not all according to plan as usual but progress none the less. first of all the brakes are now on and clear the wheels. a quick snap of the before…

new brakes installed and with temporary 2x3mm spacers until i get a 5mm machined up…

wheels on and good to go, the brakes fill the 19's nicely and look like they were meant to be there…

        • back on to the fuel pump controller, first up fixed the terminals (thanks again Scott)…

next up was to temporarily wire up the relay to check that it works. hard to tell but if you watch the video below you can't hear the pump still running once i turn the ignition off…

now i know that it worked i tidied up the wiring and cloth taped it all…

then i tucked the really under the cover and clipped it back in; no one would ever know it was there…

thanks mate, still just bedding them in and giving it a bit of shake down before i go too nuts. i haven't installed the back lines and bled them yet so i'll wait until then before i try to make my eyes pop out of my head…

hope your motor is coming on well, we've got to be due for a catch up soon. we should try and get jimmy to crank the bbq again, take it easy mate...

            • as the weather has been so good lately i took my passenger chair for a sun bake…

i'm trying to get all the little bits and pieces installed in the interior like i would have spec'd it from the factory...

not the most exciting upgrade but matches the one on the drivers side now. first aid kit in one, umbrella in the other…

              • while the chair was out i decided to whip out the centre console and install the push button start. firstly i wired up the button to the lighting circuit on the cigarette lighter and clothed taped it…

i also hooked up the multi meter to check the button operated correctly as can been seen in the video below…

lights on with the cigarette lighter closed…

lights on with the cigarette lighter open…

thanks Al, no problem installing one for you mate. i'd just have to make sure its the same set up as my car, flick me a photo of your centre console to see if the audi start button would work...

no worries about cash mate, supply me a pint at the end of the job and i'll be happy enough...

                        • once i installed the 5mm spacers i thought i'd get the alignment checked to see if i could get any more camber out of the front. the suspension shop said its pretty well set up for road and occasional track use so i thought i'd leave it alone. he did slightly adjust the rear toe...

once i got the car back home i gave the inside a quick clean after my recent rooting around installing stuff. not much more to do now; illuminated bose speaker grilles and s3 glove box handle, illuminated switch for water meth on/off and illluminated switch blank for status light, also toying with the idea of a gauge for water meth flow meter. not sure whether to install the gauge in a vent pod or replace the boost gauge on the steering cowl. i'm not really a fan of the cowl gauge at the moment as it doesn't look much like an oem install...

                            • i had a couple of days during my last break to do it a bit more to the s3, i finally got these made up to ensure my wheels clear the rs3 brakes. pretty hard to tell they are there i reckon...

i then decided to tackle wiring up my push start as i only had time to install the switch last time. not many photos unfortunately, first requirement is to remove the steering wheel...

a snap of the connection to the rear of the ignition barrel. for anyone planning to do the same mod the wires which require switching are the yellow and red ones...

while i was in the mood and things were going well i decided to install the s3 and 4 rings switches which i will use for my w/m set up. s3 push button for on/off and the 4 rings for the wm status light...

finally a quick vid of the push start in action...

once it was all complete i gave the car a wash and wax before i took it for a run to the pub. i also wiped the engine bay down and was surprised how well it came up so i took a photo...

a photo from the pub carpark...

the hybrid arrived in the post yesterday so should hopefully see more power in the new year...

and finally another shout out to my contact at audi for coming through with fuses i was chasing (a couple of fuses in the fusebox were a different type and my ocd couldn’t handle it) and he threw in an mmi cable for good measure, top man...

                              • nothing special but for some reason i like it. my mate grabbed his camera off the passenger seat to take a photo of the pub and i noticed the s3 in the shot when i was flicking through his photos. i wish he'd closed the door...
