Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

  • New Forum Server and Software

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.

We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer, Do that too!

I'll do my best to keep up.

    Current Status:
    • Email notifications including for new sign ups are failing. (PRIORITY)
    • Ads are not back online (for non logged in members) which means zero revenue until I fix that which is a bit of a priority if the forum is to continue.
    • Signatures seem to work, but the old signature pics seem to be gone.
    • SSL is broken, working on that. <Maybe fixed?
    • All accounts should be migrated with your same old password and details attached.
    • Private messages have come across.
    • Avatars seem to be hit and miss at best + uploading new ones fails < Seems fixed
    • Access rights should be the same as before.
    • Attachments and images *should* be working.
    • The search index is coming back online.

But the good news so far is that even while flogging the database and doing things, the server appears to be holding up very well without crashing or lagging. If anything it feels *too* powerful!

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

You can change the theme in the bottom left corner. I might develop something one day, in the interim I will take feedback on the best default option.

As a new feature, I PASTED that image from a snip.

And this one I dragged into the window and it magically added itself!

I like it!! Very neat and a much closer "look" like other car forums on the electric internet (so easier to learn and navigate the forum features).

Not sure why "Grunge" was chosen as the default theme - probably because the decision was left to the code-cutter!!

Does the new forum software permit a signature - can't find it? And what are the file conditions for the avatar?

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

Grunge... what can I say, I'm a certain age But like I said, I'm open to suggestion and have left all the options open for people to choose from but haven't had the time to pick which should be the default.

Signatures are in there but for some reason were turned off. I've turned them back on globally now (hopefully). Please let me know if that doesn't work.

For those that want to turn it off (or back on) or modify it:

Click your username at the upper right corner and then choose User Settings.
        1. Click Account tab
        2. Check "Show Signatures" checkbox.
        3. Click "Edit Post Signature" link.
        4. Type your signature in the editor.
        5. Click Save button.
        6. Click Save Changes button.

For avatars, I don't know why they aren't working since I did move all the files over but I will have to double check the locations. If you replace it now it will just point at the new file anyway, so have at it! In your profile, just click edit avatar.

It says "Note: The maximum size of your avatar image is 200 by 200. If your picture (or crop area) is larger, it will be resized to the allowed dimensions." which seems to indicate the system will just work it out.... but I'm having issues with it failing with some system error. Add that to the list of things to fix.

          @the_hawk: Excellent!!

I notice that you have restored both Signatures and Avatars from the old software. Well done - take $20 out of the Watercooled petty-cash tin (tell the accountant that I said that it is OK)!!

Just one further suggestion and I'll remain silent - the "YouTube" tile at the end of tile-list is blank (at least it is on my screen). Not a big issue-just bringing it to your attention!

Again, thanks for the good work.

I appreciate the feedback, keep it coming and I'll add that one to the list!

            Signatures are fixed.
Avatars are "working", but not how I wanted. I might have to settle on that.

I've noticed that some buttons appear blank but usually it's contextually obvious enough that people should be fine. That Youtube one, I have to assume there is a missing logo file somewhere for that one.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

The_Hawk:OK, at the risk of monopolizing this thread -"keep it coming" I will!!

Does the new software have an UNDO function - some other car forums have this facility? If so, it is mighty helpful for those that tend to be more verbose in their posts (like someone whose identity I won't disclose)!

There is an undo/redo function while writing a response and mods can see things that have been edited. Not sure what you mean otherwise.

Edit: That youtube button seems to be broken, I suspect a hold over from the old forums. I'll have to look into that.
Edit 2: Deleted broken Youtube button. I suspect old posts with that old tag/code might be broken.

There is a video tag button which does this:

                Without tags: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn2rJxTlomY
