Group Buy / EOI new generation DNS head units (RNS-510 alternative)
I don't think we should be rushing to cancel our orders. The units that have been delivered are pre-production units and there will be improvements made before the final product is released (I hope)

It's the "I hope" bit that worries me. I've booked in to have a different unit installed today. I'm over waiting!

Surely there must be some level of standard even for a pre-production unit.
So far the amount of bugs is beyond ridiculous, infact they aren't even bugs, the unit should be deemed DEFECTIVE.

I also believe that seeing how we are the beta testers that we should be given the option to trade our units in for the final release product. Make it fair to us testers, we shouldn't be stuck with 7-800 dollar potential paperweights
I think phrases like "not of acceptable quality" and "not fit for purpose" might be apt. You can't make a claim against advertised faults/bugs. But you can on non-advertised ones, especially if they are unable to be fixed with software.
True, the frozen white screen of death isn't s software fix, my static feedback in GPS no matter what form of music I'm playing i doubt is fixable via software.
I dunno, mines been working pretty fine so far, but i've just been driving around listening to the radio haha. iPod is being a bit funny with the not charging (seems to me to be a software bug, power pin is being turned off on playback, bizare), but yea.
Will see on the weekend with my big road trip (~1,000km) how it goes. I think i'll probably just load up music on an SD card and use that, and have my phone charging via 30pin. Annoying, but I dunno what else to do.

That's one thing I'll give this unit credit for, the SD playback is better than my clarion, it will at least shuffle the entire contents of the 'music' folder (with separate artist folders within) I have unlike my clarion which would only shuffle what ever artist folder I was in.

Cool, I haven't tried SD playback yet. Will have to give it a go this afternoon. I was hoping to just throw a stack of folders in it and have it shuffle everything haha.
The other thing is, the sound quality is significantly better than my old headunit and the other headunits i've had in other cars, can't really complain. I'm actually really happy now with the better sound quality output of the headunit plus the Focal speakers

FLAC playback is supported (yay), but it doesn't read ID3/Metadata tags. ALAC (Apple lossless) doesn't work, though.
I've found that music playback is paused (???) when you engage reverse/reversing camera starts. Not sure why. It could be something in my settings, though? In the secret menu I have OPS turned off, Back on, and reverse volume level set to current.

Picked mine up from the post office today and got it installed a few hours ago.
I havent had a chance to thoroughly test yet but it seems to be going good like modas (this is without a sd card, hopefully I can test that next week when mine arrives - ebay )
I've noticed a couple bugs similar to others that have been posted but the first thing (and I'm surprised no one has picked up on this) is that its not a capacitive touch screen, still resistive. Unless I read that wrong initially, I was expecting it to work like a modern smart phone instead of my old rcd unit. It seems more sensitive and better than my stock unit, was just thinking it would be different is all.
Overall the unit seems very quick, definitely faster than my stock one. I thought the resolution would be a bit iffy but looks great. Radio quality is good but I’ve only tested on Nova and Edge which is notoriously bad. It did drop out a couple times on Edge (no issues with Nova) and then it showed a weird scramble of letters and symbols but fine after I went from Nova back to Edge.
I opted to get the digital tv add on and so far using a standard pair of bunny ears I've only got the sh*tty channels but I've ordered a slightly better antenna (the unit comes with a double antenna output) which I'm hoping will help pick up normal Aussie digital channels (7,9 10 etc), wont know for a few weeks.
Ok so the issues I’ll try to add to the google doc that haven’t already been mentioned, which are very basic compared to some of the others I’ve noticed but..
*On radio mode when I press ‘extras’ it scans through the frequencies
*I forget what its called but theres an option for internet browsing, when you go to enter a different URL a keyboard pops up, but its way too small to use. I don’t know how to get internet working on this yet but it seems like a cool feature, any thoughts?
*I’ve got a two door golf not a four door, there was no option for a two door when selecting my car type (for the door open monitor)
*the GPS doesn’t like roundabouts. Mine is a little slow on 90 degree corners but roundabouts seem to confuse it a bit. I can try to upload a video if you guys wanna see what I mean. I’ve never had a GPS unit before so I don’t know if they all act that way, but I wouldn’t have thought so.
Oh I have a question, does it matter which way I face the GPS receiver? It’s currently sitting upside down with the cable 90 degrees from the unit so its sideways when you think about it, will that affect how it picks up its signal?
Also I have a sub installed, done in a shop and I was wanting to hook it up the proper way to the unit. This is what I found when I removed my current unit Looking at the cables that came with it I noticed that there is only one cable for the sub but looks like two cables coming from my amp. I’m not sure what the existing converter does but its wired directly into my canbus cables. I have a separate sub gain control knob but guessing that for optimal use I can just unplug it and control everything through the head unit?
It was a hot day today and the unit was working fine. Our winters do get pretty cold so wondering if I’ll encounter problems down the track but in the heat its not getting those weird scrambles others have noticed. Software version is
Oh wow. The first post definitely used to say it was a capacitive touch screen..... One of the big things I was looking forward to and disappointed by when I received the unit.
True the unit needs to be more resistant or durable to climate changes.during the same day I can have 15 degree nights and 60 degree days and cold puts a white screen of death up every day it's 18 degree Fahrenheit or below.

This was the RDS issue I mentioned on the spreadsheet....weird characters show up then "clears" up and displays the correct stuff.

Shouldn't but I have always had mine facing up (ie the flat bottom is down and curved part facing up

This is a line out converter to go from speaker wire to RCA. This is no longer needed since the DNS has a low level RCA Sub out, although it's just one RCA wire (not stereo Left and Right). As another member has done, you can get a splitter to go from one to two (male single into the DNS out and then it would provide female RCA left and right). Then plug an RCA cable from this directly to your amp sub input.
