Dunno why you'd want to replace the original Mk7 headunit anyways?
yeah, it has a lot of stuff, just no GPS/navigation been getting quotes of $1650 - $2200 to retrofit a GPS on the existing system :'(

To be honest, there isn't (and probably wont ever be) a third party HU for the Mk7, and it's so tightly integrated into the vehicle functions, that your only choice is to get VW Mk7 unit that has GPS and retrofit it. It's not going to be a cheap/easy venture either. I'm assuming that your current model wouldn't have the GPS antenna either so you'd need to wire that in too.

In hindsight, you probably would have been better speccing GPS from the factory.

You could always get in contact with VW parts directly and find out what the parts number is and try and source it that way, but I feel like you'd probably have to activate it in computer too (via a dealer)....

      • There are already third party GPS units for the mk7. They basically act as an av accessory to add nav to the dumb screen. To say there will never be a third party hu is very naive.

I guess I should have clarified, I meant a full replacement unit, that carries every function the original does. Of course to say 'never' is silly, but it'd take a lot of work to reverse engineer it. You can probably get the generic chinese units right now, but we all know how terrible they are.

I found this. Dunno how good it is, but it looks like it uses the original unit and piggy backs on some functions/buttons to put a WINCE GPS unit in. My guess is to get touchscreen input/button input it is a modification of the OEM unit.

Edit: nevermind, it's just this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/10...AVIGATION.html Piggybacking on the cars CAN connection.

            Clever.

Definately agree that a drop-in replacement would be harder to engineer in Mk7 than MkV/IV but there sort of isnt a need due to the architecture. The Mk7 is a touchscreen that connects to accessories (eg nav unit in the glovebox) which in some ways actually makes it easier to engineer (but harder to exploit). There are technical hurdles definately but any sort of protection method is proven time and again to be only a matter of time to overcome.

              • How about the update for the early batch of the dns? Can you ask sandy how long before they send them out?

thanks guys. I couldn't get any response on the mk7 threads about this but eventually found the same websites you got.

I don't want to hijack the thread here, but also found a UK website (VW Golf Mark VII 7 SatNav GPS Multimedia Rear Camera Interface :: VW :: XCarLink). Been in touch with them and was told that while they are currently out of stock (will be in stock later this week), they are able to ship to australia and provide australia maps. They also attached the installation manual in their response. The nav uses iGo. What is made clear in the installation guide is that "The unit is a video only interface. For audio, you must connect the Audio Out connections either to an FM modulator or AUX input if present in the car. You can firstly select FM or AUX, and then switch to the AV inputs to have sound and video playing simultaneously"

I would think that all the other solutions hooking up to the CAN connection would be the same.

At 350pounds, aka AUD$585, the current Australians solutions are a bit of a rip off. I'd just need to get myself one of the UK products and find myself an installer. It looks pretty easy to do, I'm just not sure how to take off the golf7 panel/LCD and make the connections.

                  • Sorry guys being snowed under with PMs and emails left while I was overseas plus playing catch up with Audiosources.

It seems Audiosources is being extra cautious with this initial batch, because it's not at full production and there are more elements that have to be hand made / soldered rather than machine. The hardware is not being changed, but they are running a full ageing test on a few units made in this way, and if there are no issues they should be able to release the units for shipping in a few days.

As for Golf 7, yes it is significantly harder to make replacement units for but Audiosources is working on this - it is their entire business after all. I don't know if Audiosources will end up going down the add-on box road, I guess we will just have to see - so far I don't think anyone is close to cracking the new CAN-Bus yet.

So the radio module tweak you mentioned yesterday was in firmware, not hardware?

I understand the cautiousness, hand built (soldered) electronics are typically a bit more fragile compared to mass produced parts. Done correctly they should be identical, it's just that hand built electronics are usually rapid prototypes or press units haha, so they're rarely done correctly (different to what is done here, though).

                      • Sandy, is the touchscreen capacitive or resistive? I tried to look through the thread but couldn't find that spec

                        • Sandy could you ask audiosource for the first batch to be discounted? Because by the sounds of it we are there testers x 12 or what ever number it is who ordered it if when we get it and we have problems audiosource. will fix it....so more or less we are testing there units to find problems if any come up?

                          • I've been following this thread for a while,.. Not because I'm interested in this unit (not now anyways) but to see when this thing eventually gets sent out.

Seriously guys, you must have a patience of a monk,.. There are other options out there you know.

Let's see what excuse AudioS has installed for next week

                              • I too am a little worried we will get a pre production hand made items for the initial batch but as long as Sandy can guarantee us that the warranties will be honoured I think we should be okay. Maybe we could get the $25 extended warranty charge waived for the initial group or something to put everyone's minds at ease?
