Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Set off with friends for a trip through western Qld. Had my T4 diesel serviced including the replacement timing gear. Having travelled 6000k and almost reaching Mooloolaba on the way home, the motor just ceased to function. Not seized, just no compression on any cylinder. I just hope that it is covered by the service centres waranty. Probable timing belt slipped and taken out the valves, possible rockers, possible pistons. NRMA having it returned to Sydney..and then the fun starts. Jim

Last time I did one, the pistons were fine, but it destroyed the head.

Cracked the combustion chambers where the glow plug threads are, and smashed all the lifter buckets and shims.

Had the same thing happen on a Land Rover Discovery 1.

When they replaced the timing belt they didn't tighten a retainer on the tensioning device. It slipped...

I will be following this thread with interest. While I have never had any form of pileup,I follow the threads on the T4 Forum. I have changed the belts on the two T4s I have owned & still own. This maintenance procedure requires careful work after considerable research.
Unfortunately there are too many mechanics that don't have the necessary experience/knowledge & special tools.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

I understand that the water pump should be replaced at the same time. This was not done. I think it might be time for a new service centre.

Yeah, it's just another thing to go wrong and cause the belt to fail if not changed.

Last one of these I did, the previous mechanic left the old pump on it, the bearing it failed, skewed the gear, causing the belt to wear away on the belt cover. I managed to catch it when the belt was ¾ of an inch wide still.

Car now with repairers. Timing gear intact. What else could cause a sudden loss of power and loss of all compression?

The spanner they left inside it?

When I left he was about to check timing to see if anything slipped. Next was to remove rocker cover. Haven"t heard from him today

Sounds more like a stripped spitzl bolt thread in the flux capacitor........ Possibly the quadrionic plasma condenser got taken out too.

Followup is that timing appears to be correct but compression test showed no compression on any cylinder. This has got him confused so at the moment they are about to remove the head to have a look inside motor

Does the car happen to be in Darwin or Alice Springs? They seem very slow to do anything, they should have known by the next day really.

Took him 2 hours to check timing belt. Car sat for 5 days before he touched it again

Motor destroyed. Dropped a valve and bits all through motor. Block damaged beyond repair. Anyone know of a replacement motor? 2.5l diesel.
